Texarkana College moves closer to conference title

Texarkana College remains on the brink of its second straight Region XIV East Zone title, but the Bulldogs would probably already be home free if they had taken care of business at their home away from home.

However, after Sunday’s split with Paris Junior College at Texas High, the Bulldogs are only 7-5 at Tiger Field and 11-1 outside Texarkana in the conference race.

Ironically, that one loss was at Paris, when TC’s defense collapsed in the final inning allowing the Dragons to post a come-from-behind win.

Sunday’s Game 1 appeared to be a case of deju vu, PJC again taking advantage of Bulldog mistakes to post a 5-4 win in eight innings. Game 2 was a different story, TC left-hander Nick Forgarty coming within one out of his second straight shutout as the Bulldogs won, 3-1.

“We’re definitely not satisfied with a split; never can be,” said Bulldogs coach Will Bolt, whose team still has at least a 2-game lead over Navarro after the latter was shocked by last-place Lon Morris on Wednesday. “We didn’t swing the bats that well today. We’re just having quality at-bats like we need to. We had a couple of big hits in the first game, but we had opportunities to put them away and we just didn’t do it.”

The Bulldogs (33-15, 18-6) travel to Tyler for a 3 p.m. non-conference, 9-inning game today.

Game 1

Paris 5, Texarkana 4 (8 innings)

Brad Picha’s solo homer on an 0-2 pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning sent the game into overtime, and the Dragons won it on a throwing error in the top of the eighth.

“We were one strike away from winning the game,” said Bolt. “I think Franco (Pace) has given up two hits to left-handed hitters all year long, and he had him (Picha) in a good spot. But he got a breaking ball up, and he put a good swing on it and got the ball up in the wind.”

The Dragons won it in the next inning when closer Colton Reavis gave up a 1-out walk, and Rodney Garcia singled to right one out later. Phil Delisle, running on the play, came all the way around to score when the relay throw was lobbed over the cutoff man’s head.

It was the second straight unearned run for the Dragons, who scored in the sixth on a throwing error, although the tying run was thrown out at the plate.

“It (throw from outfield) was just a lack of focus, plain and simple,” Bolt said.

The Bulldogs staked starter Matt Lackie to a 4-1 lead through four innings. Tin Enriquez singled home a second-inning run, and Austin Atwell doubled in Richard Sanguinetti, who had tripled, to break a 1-1 tie in the third.

TC chased Paris starter Devin Avery from the mound in a 2-run fourth, two errors, a hit batsman and Jake Rogers’ RBI single making it 4-1.

But Paris scored single runs in the next four innings to claim the victory. Submarining right-hander Justin Scharf, who pitched McKinney North to a 2-1 win over state champion Texas High in last year’s playoffs, struck out four over the last two innings to pick up the win.

Sanguinetti, Brittan Diamond and Enriquez each had two of TC’s 10 hits.

Game 2

Forgarty pitched in and out of trouble in going the distance in the nightcap, which was switched from nine to seven innings after the opener went extra innings.

Fogarty, a left-hander from Canada, struck out four and walked three, and missed a shutout when a potential double-play grounder was bobbled in the seventh.

“Nick has been very good for us,” Bolt said. “He should have had a shutout today, and he was coming off a shutout last time out. He’s been throwing really well and has been able to mix up three pitches. He got himself into some jams today, but he made some nice pitches to get himself out.”

TC gave Fogarty all the support he needed with a 2-run first inning. Taylor Coleman singled up the middle to start the rally, and raced to third on Sanguinetti’s double down the line in right. Austin Atwell lofted a sacrifice fly to right, the speedy Coleman separating the catcher from the ball with a hard slide, and Jordy Snikeris drove in the second run with a ground ball to second.

Snikeris set up the third run with a hustle double leading off the fourth. After Hunter Allday sacrificed him to third, Diamond singled through the middle to make it 3-0.

Sangunetti was 2 for 2 and Coleman 2 for 3 to lead the Bulldogs, who had six hits. Picha, who was 4 for 4 in the opener, was held hitless and struck out twice against Fogarty. Garcia and Craig Whitehead had two hits each for Paris (26-19, 14-10).

The Buccaneers dropped an elimination game to Texarkana, 13-5, Tuesday afternoon at Leroy Dreyer Field.

Bulldog head coach Will Bolt, a former Texas A&M assistant, got a two-run homer from Joaquin Hinojosa in the top of the third inning.

The Dogs put up six runs in the fifth, three of those coming home on a
Jordy Snikeris dinger.

The Bucs struggled defensively in the seven-inning game, six of Texarkana's runs were unearned.

Blinn ends its year at 42-&-16.

San Jacinto pounded Texarkana, 15-3, in the second game of the day to claim the regional title.

The Blinn Buccaneer baseball team won three consecutive elimination games to reach the semifinals of the Region 14 Tournament, but on Tuesday the club’s Junior College World Series dreams came to a close with a 13-5 loss to Texarkana.

Blinn, the second seed out of the South Zone, dropped its tournament opener to Navarro 11-3, but bounced back on Sunday and Monday with three consecutive victories, including a 6-4 victory over Navarro Monday night to advance into the semifinals.

But in Tuesday’s contest the Buccaneers were unable to get any traction as Texarkana pounced on every Blinn miscue on the afternoon.

Sophomore left-hander Zach Hardoin (10-2), who went undefeated during the regular season, suffered his second loss of the tournament on two days’ rest. After Blinn’s victory over Navarro on Monday night, Hardoin sought out Blinn (42-17) coach Harvey McIntyre for the opportunity to pitch against Texarkana, but the University of Missouri signee allowed six runs - three earned - in 4 1/3 innings.

Even though Texarkana managed just two hits against Hardoin, the southpaw walked five batters, and Texarkana’s first hit of the day was a two-run home run by Joaquin Hinojosa that gave Texarkana a 4-1 lead.

“When I got him off the mound I told him I appreciate his effort and his will to take the baseball for us,” McIntyre said. “He gave us a great effort.”

Jonathan Delgado entered the game with one out and two on in the fifth after Hardoin walked two batters and immediately ran into trouble as Thomas Watson hit an RBI single and Jordy Snikeras launched a three-run home run that gave Texarkana a 10-2 lead.

Blinn committed just one error in the game, but was plagued with fielding miscues throughout the day. A passed ball on a third strike in the third inning allowed a runner to reach base prior to Hinojosa’s home run, and on two other occasions Blinn outfielders allowed fly balls to fall in front of them after initially running toward the wall. In all, six of Texarkana’s 13 runs were unearned.

Center fielder Trey Johnson was a lone bright spot for the Buccaneers. Johnson hit an RBI single in the first inning to tie the score, then hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning. He had all four of Blinn’s RBIs in the game.

“I think it’s fitting that in Trey Johnson’s last at-bat for us he hit a three-run home run for us,” McIntyre said. “How else would you write that script? When we need a big knock he always seems to produce for us and he did it again today.”

John Stilson earned the win for Texarkana, throwing 5 2/3 innings. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits and four walks, striking out six. After Ty Moore got the final out of the sixth inning, Colton Reavis threw a perfect seventh inning to end the game - and Blinn’s season - via mercy rule.

San Jacinto, which won all four of its tournament games, defeated Texarkana 8-5 Tuesday night to win the tournament championship and advance to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

Blinn’s roster included 15 sophomores this season, including Jonathan Ogden, Zak Leonhardt, Trenton Irwin, Brian Smith, Brandon Finken, Johnson, Cameron Goff, Broc Haymon, Kendall Korbal, Hardoin, Michael Dixon, Phillip Butler, Eric Staha, Cody Morrison and Mario Eramo.

“This group accomplished so much,” McIntyre said. “Winning 42 baseball games is extremely impressive. Not just what they did from a statistical standpoint, they played hard and with energy. They were a lot of fun to be around, to coach and to watch.”

Blinn will be sending plenty of athletes on to four-year schools next season, including Eramo at Penn State, Hardoin at Missouri, Johnson and Ogden at Mississippi State, Korbal at Texas Christian University, Smith at Sam Houston State, Leonhardt at San Angelo State, Irwin at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Morrison at Texas A&M. McIntyre said he also expects Dixon to sign with a four-year program after the Bucs’ right-hander generated plenty of interest with his performance at the conference tournament.

“They have done the right thing from day one,” McIntyre said. “They’re a very unselfish, very committed group. They’re great players, but at the same time they’re just an outstanding group of young men.

“It’s a big group of kids we brought in and it’s a big group of kids we’re losing. They brought more sophomore leadership than any other group we’ve had. Hopefully our young kids can learn just by watching those guys, and they should because it’s a great group to follow up.”

Both Morrison and Johnson were named to the all-Region 14 team.

The Buccaneers will have to replace their starting first baseman, shortstop and outfielders, as well as the bulk of their starting pitchers next season.

“To me it’s trying to replace Trey Johnson, Cody Morrison, Mario Eramo and Zak Leonhardt in the lineup, and Ogden’s presence in the infield, but at the same time we’ve got a great group of freshmen who will step right in and do a great job for us next year as sophomores.”

BRENHAM, Texas—It would seem difficult to take something positive from a 15-3 loss, but Texarkana College coach Will Bolt did just that after his team was eliminated by seventh-ranked San Jacinto College Tuesday in the Region XIV baseball finals at Blinn College’s Leroy Dryer Field.

“The way I see it, we had two bad innings against San Jac in both games we played them,” Bolt said. “In the first game we had a chance to put them on the ropes early, and we let them take the momentum away from us. The same thing happened today. If we had managed to stay in the winner’s bracket, things might have been different.”

The Bulldogs, who run-ruled host Blinn College, 13-5, earlier in the day to earn a second shot at San Jacinto, finished the season at 40-15. The Gators take a 43-9 record to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colo., in two weeks.

San Jacinto raked six Texarkana pitchers for 19 hits in the game.

“We just totally ran out of gas in the second game,” Bolt said. “When you run tired arms out there against a team like San Jac, they’ll make you pay.”

The Bulldogs lost shortstop Trey Buck to a possible fractured wrist when he collided with the Gators first baseman after bunting. Buck played a key role in the win over Blinn.

The Bulldogs managed nine hits, including a double and single by John Stilson, who replaced Buck at shortstop. Jake Rogers had a pair of singles and drove in a run.

“We had a good season, winning the conference championship,” Bolt said. “We talked all year about going to Grand Junction, and we fell just one game short. We’ve got 14 freshmen coming back, and hopefully the experience they got here will help us get back.”

Texarkana’s 10-hit attack in the early game included home runs by Joaquin Hinojosa and Jordy Snikeris.

Pitching on two days rest, John Stilson improved to 12-1 on the season, pitching 5 2/3 innings and throwing 103 pitches. He walked four and struck out six, while yielding four earned runs. Ty Moore allowed a run before retiring the last batter in the sixth, and Colton Reavis came on to pitch a 1-2-3 seventh.

Leadoff batter Trey Buck was a thorn in the Buccaneers’ sides, drawing three walks, stealing three bases and scoring three runs.

The Bulldogs broke a 3-all tie with three runs in the third inning and never trailed after that. Buck drew a 1-out walk, stole second, and one out later Brian Ellis reached on a third-strike wild pitch. Buck eventually scored on a balk by losing pitcher Zach Hardoin (10-2), and Ellis rode home on Hinojosa’s team-leading 11th home run over the center field wall.

After Blinn pulled within 4-2 with a run in the fourth inning, the Bulldogs put it out of reach in the fifth. Buck and Ellis drew walks and pulled off a double steal after Hardoin was replaced by Jonathan Delgado.

Buck scored as Hinojosa grounded out to shortstop, and after David Allday was hit by a pitch, Thomas Watson singled, driving in Ellis. Hot-hitting Lance Marvel, who was 3 for 4 with two runs batted in, then drove in Allday with a single. Snikeris’ 2-run homer capped the 5-run inning.

Marvel, Buck and Austin Atwell had RBI singles in the seventh as the Bulldogs ended the game on the run-rule.

Watson’s double and two singles led TC at the plate. Watson had a double and single for the Bulldogs (40-14).

Bulldogs suffer 8-5 setback against San Jacinto College

BRENHAM, Texas—The long ball has put Texarkana College behind the 8-ball.

Pre-tournament favorite San Jacinto College cracked five home runs en route to an 8-5 victory over the Bulldogs Monday in a battle of unbeatens in the Region XIV baseball tournament at Blinn College.

The loss leaves TC in the position of having to win three straight games, including two today, to win the regional title and JUCO World Series berth. The Bulldogs face the winner of Monday’s late game between Navarro and Blinn at 1 p.m. today. If they survive that contest, they will get San Jacinto at 5 and will have to beat the Gators to force a final game at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Texarkana (39-14) managed just one run after loading the bases with one out in the top of the first inning, and the Gators started their home run barrage in the bottom of the frame with back-to-back-to-back shots off the bats of Steven Vidaurri, Devin Shines and Ryan Burnaman. A double and stolen base by Zachary Benson and an RBI single by Danny Hernandez made it 5-1 and finished starter Zach Fowler after one inning and 46 pitches.

“The first five innings of the game were very intense,” said TC coach Will Bolt. “I thought we were extremely ready to go, and we got a run in that first inning, but should have probably put up a crooked number there. Then they answered back in the bottom of the inning.”

Left-handed starter David Rollins, who opposed Liberty-Eylau’s Fowler in the 2006 prep playoffs while pitching for Carthage, managed to survive a 3-run Bulldog second inning, pitching through the seventh to earn the win. He threw 130 pitches before leaving after walking the leadoff batter in the eighth.

“It’s hard to play from behind, and our guys battled back to make a game of it,” said Bolt. “We had some baserunners on, but every time he (Rollins) got out of jam he got a little more confidence. He made some adjustments, and so did we. We just missed out on some opportunities late in the game.

The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the eighth against relievers Jeff Abt and Tommy Collier, but got only one run on Austin Atwell’s infield hit. But the runner coming from second was caught rounding third and tagged in a rundown to end the threat.

Brian Ellis led off the ninth with an infield single, but was picked off first base by the catcher. Collier, who reportedly threw 130 pitches in a Saturday night start, then retired the next two batters to end the game.

Rollins, who wild-pitched a run home in the first before striking out the last two batters, ran into a jam in the second when the bottom of the TC batting order started a 3-run rally. Jordy Snikeris singled, Lance Marvel doubled over the third-base bag, and Jake Rogers spanked an RBI single to right.

Trey Buck’s double to left-center plated Marvel, and Rogers scored the third run when Atwell sent the center fielder to the fence to snag his sacrifice fly. But Rollins again got the next two batters to limit the damage.

If there was a bright spot for the Bulldogs, it was the work of the bullpen. Shane Cole retired the first eight batters he faced before Deric Hawkins smacked a home run to right-center. A walk and

Gregg Alcazar’s 2-run homer to center with two outs in the fifth made it 8-4.

Brittan Diamond pitched 1 2/3 innings and Colton Reavis 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

“After the first five innings of the game I thought we pitched pretty good,” Bolt said. “Shane had his moments when he was good, but the two-run homer was big. But Diamond and Reavis came in and did a good job. They gave us a chance to come back in the game, and I sure felt to the very end that we were going to come back and win.”

The Bulldogs outhit the Gators 10-8, but the only extra-base hits were the doubles by Marvel and Buck. Snikeris and Marvel were the only TC players with two hits.

BRENHAM, Texas—Eleven runs, 16 hits, five home runs—and Justin Fowler had no hand in any of them.

Yet Fowler was perhaps the key figure in Texarana College’s 11-6 victory over Navarro Sunday in the second round of the Region XIV baseball tournament at Blinn College.

Fowler, last year’s Bulldog ace but a nearly-forgotten man this season, pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Tanner Bailey, allowing TC to take control of the game against Navarro, which had beaten the Bulldogs three times in the conference round-robin schedule.

“Justin’s year has been up and down, not the type of year he wanted,” said TC coach Will Bolt. “But not one time has he wavered from the team, and he’s never felt sorry for himself. I think he’s the story of the day, coming in and getting some stops when we needed it. He pitched his tail off today.”

Fowler did weaken in the eighth, walking the first two batters he faced, but closer Joaquin Hinojosa did his job, coming on to strike out five of the six batters he faced.

“I felt good today. I got ahead early, and it works a lot better when you throw strike one,” said Fowler, a sophomore from Diana, Texas. “I got a little tired in my last inning, and my arm started dragging a little bit. I started leaving everything up.”

There were plenty of other heroes on the day for the Bulldogs, who play the winner of the late game between Panola College and San Jacinto North into today’s 5 p.m. semifinals.

David Allday, the East Division’s Player of the Year and an all-region selection, was 4 for 4 with a double and his 10th home run, a prodigious blast to dead center, and scored four runs.. The former Texas High standout is 6 for 7 in two tournament games.

Thomas Watson slugged his seventh and eighth home runs, driving in five runs. He also doubled.

Brian Ellis also had three hits, and it was his 2-run shot to right that finished Navarro starter Logan Chitwood in a 5-run fifth. Watson’s second homer of the game, a 3-run shot to left, came off reliever Austin Pruitt to cap the big inning.

“I’ve never seen anything like the way our hitters squared the ball up in those couple of innings,” Bolt said. “We knew what we were looking for, and when got it we didn’t miss it.”

Lance Marvel’s seventh homer of the season, almost a replica of Allday’s, was the only solo round-tripper for TC. It came in the fourth inning and tied the game after Jordy Snikeris’ 2-run single had pulled the Bulldogs within one earlier in the frame.

Bailey struggled early on, giving up a 2-run homer to Bobby Buckner, son of former major leaguer Bill Buckner, that momentarily put Navarro up 5-2. He was pulled in the fifth after yielding a solo home run to Joey Fuda and a single.

The first batter Fowler faced reached on an error, but he settled in to retire nine batters in a row before the two walks in the eighth. Hinojosa then did his thing.

“He plays right field, hits in the four hole, then comes in and throws two scoreless innings,” Bolt said. “He did a good job, and we’re going to need him the rest of the tournament.”

Allday is confident the Bulldogs will punch the school’s third ticket to the JUCO World Series.

“We definitely have a chance to win it,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of pitching left, all the hitters are coming around, everybody’s seeing the ball real well and we’re putting up a lot of runs. We’re going to win it.”

Zach Fowler is scheduled to take the mound for the Bulldogs today.

Galveston and Angelina were the first teams eliminated on Sunday. Host Blinn downed Galveston, 14-6, and Alvin College knocked off Angelina, 7-2. Angelina dropped a 6-2 decision to San Jacinto North in Saturday’s late game.

Alvin and Navarro play the first elimination game today at 10 a.m. with Blinn taking on the Panola-San Jacinto loser at 1. The winners of those two games will play again at 8 p.m.

Bulldogs rout Galveston College at regional tournament, 11-3

BRENHAM, Texas—On a day dominated by the East Division, Texarkana College may have been the most dominant of all in Saturday’s opening round of the 2009 Region XIV baseball tournament at Blinn College.

Ironically, the Bulldogs, Navarro College and Panola College all won by the 8-run rule that goes into effect in the seventh inning. Even more ironic were the identical final scores, 11-3, Navarro beating host Blinn in seven innings and Panola downing defending champion Alvin College in eight.

As for Texarkana College, the win became official when David Allday’s opposite-field double to left sent Joaquin Hinojosa scurrying home from first with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. The same combination almost ended the game on the 10-run rule with one out in the bottom of the fifth when Allday singled Hinojosa to third, but was nailed at second base on the cutoff throw from the shortstop. The next batter, Thomas Watson, hit a high fly ball to right, which would have been plenty deep enough to plate the deciding run.

While it had no bearing on the eventual outcome, the play did have some significance. TC starter John Stilson (11-1) had thrown only 37 pitches through five innings, but needed 24 to get through the sixth when Galveston scored its second run and left two men on base.

“John still only threw about 60 pitches, and he was just pitching to contact today,” said TC coach Will Bolt. “He wasn’t necessarily trying to strike everybody out. He was just attacking the zone and trying to make them make contact early in the count. He was able to do that the first five innings even though they hit some balls hard.”

Stilson, who struck out three and walked two, retired seven batters with a first pitch. Shane Cole pitched the seventh, allowing a home run to Scott Paskat, the first batter he faced, before retiring the next three, one by strikeout.

“We had a chance to end it in the fifth when John’s pitch count was down, and didn’t get it done, then he labored a little bit in the sixth,” Bolt said.. “But the sixth inning was going to be his last regardless of what happened.”

The Bulldogs (38-13) never trailed after leadoff batter Trey Buck belted a home run to left in the bottom of the first inning. It was the first of three long balls by TC, the others coming in an 8-run second after an error opened the floodgates.

Buck reached on the error with one out, and Austin Atwell followed with a double to right, putting runners at second and third. Galveston starter Dan Lazarou almost escaped without scoring damage, forcing a pop fly to the shortstop for the second out, but Hinojosa, who was 3 for 3 with four runs batted in, blasted his team-leading 10th home run near the 355-mark in left-center to make it 4-1.

Jordy Snikeris’ single between a hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases, and Lance Marvel dumped a single to right, driving in two runs. Jake Rogers capped the rally when he lined the first pitch over the fence in left for a 2-run homer.

“They booted the ball, and we took advantage of it,” Bolt said. “I thought we swung the bats well.”

Ryan Sampere came on in the fourth inning to quiet the Bulldogs bats, although he yielded an unearned run when Atwell bunted for a hit and went all the way to third base when the ball was thrown away. He scored on Hinojosa’s hit up the middle.

Atwell and Allday, each with a double and single, joined Hinojosa with multiple hits in the game.

Bolt wasn’t surprised with the East Division’s early success in the tournament.

“We knew the East was strong this year, and the top three teams showed it today,” he said. “And I think (4th seed) Angelina is capable of making some noise, too.”

Angelina played the South Zone’s top seed, San Jacinto North, in Saturday’s late game.

Texarkana plays Navarro at 5 p.m today in the winner’s bracket. Navarro was the only team holding an edge over the Bulldogs in round-robin conference play.

“We won the last one, and we think we outplayed them in three out of the four games in conference,” Bolt said. “Actually, we beat them in a tournament down here, and I think we’ve played well enough to win every one of those games except one. If we keep swinging the bats like we are, I like our chances.”

Elmination games will be played at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. today with Blinn and Galveston meeting in the first and Alvin and the loser of Saturday’s late game the other. The winner of the late game will play Panola at 8 p.m.

Texarkana College first baseman David Allday has been named Player of the Year in the East Zone of Region XIV baseball.

Allday, a sophomore from Texas High, was one of eight Bulldogs named to the all-conference team, including another ex-Texas High standout, John Stilson, at pitcher.

Second baseman Trey Buck and Thomas Watson, selected at designated hitter, made the elite squad for the second straight year. They are joined by sophomore transfer Joaquin Hinojosa and freshman Brian Ellis in the outfield, freshman catcher Jordy Snikeris and freshman pitcher Tanner Bailey.

Allday, who has signed with Kansas State University, batted .435 in confeence play with six home runs, five doubles and two triples. He drove in 35 runs, and was one of the top defensive first basemen in the league.

Stilson, who pitched under the watchful eyes of numerous major league scouts during the latter part of the season, struck out 50, walked eight and surrendered 43 hits in 43 2/3 innings. He finished conference play with a 2.47 earned run average and a 6-1 record.

Watson, injured in the early part of the season, batted .375 with three doubles, two triples, two home runs and drove in 15 runs in conference play. He plays third base for the Bulldogs.

Hinojosa, headed for Texas A&M, had a team-high 36 hits in 89 at-bats, including six doubles, two triples and seven home runs. He batted .404 and tied Allday for the team RBI lead with 35.

Buck was chosen at second base, although he also saw action at shortstop. He hit .309 with eight doubles, a triple, a home run and 17 runs batted in. He also drew 22 walks from the leadoff position.

Ellis collected 33 hits in 97 at bats, including eight doubles, three driples and two home runs. He batted .340 and drove in 24 runs.

Arkansas Baptist College provided a little batting practice for Texarkana College as the Bulldogs pounded out 20 hits in a 24-2 victory Saturday at George Dobson Field.

Included in the 20 hits were two home runs by Austin Atwell in his first two at-bats, and another by Thomas Watson.

Zach Fowler was the Bulldogs’ starting pitcher, throwing two innings. Seven pitchers followed Fowler to the mound, throwing one inning each.

This was a warmup game before the state playoffs later this week for the Bulldogs.

“We did get some benefit from this game,” said TC head coach Will Bolt. “We were able to see different players get some action, and get some work for our pitchers.”

Texarkana had a pair of six-run innings and scored in all but one frame in the nine-inning contest.

A 22-minute rain delay interrupted play in the fourth inning with the Bulldogs on top, 11-2, at the time.

During the rain delay, it was decided to play just one nine-inning game instead of the originally scheduled two seven-inning contests.

Atwell’s home run in the first inning put the Bulldogs on top 1-0, but Arkansas Baptist answered on three straight hits in the second inning. A diving catch by Devin Day down the right-field foul line saved two more runs.

The Bulldogs then exploded for six runs on five hits in the bottom of the second inning.

In the rain-delayed fourth inning, the Bulldogs scored five times for a 14-2 lead.

A two-run homer by Watson highlighted a six-run fifth inning.

After Fowler’s two-inning stint on the mound, Brittan Diamond, Ty Moore, Justin Fielden, Shane Cole, Justin Fowler, Joaquin Hinojosa, and John Stilson pitched an inning apiece.

Lance Marvel and Stilson paced the Bulldogs’ 20-hit attack with three hits each. David Allday, Jordy Snikeris, David Allday, Atwell, and Day had two hits each.

Dan Short and Garry Thomas had two hits each for Arkansas Baptist, a first-year baseball program.

TC Bulldogs’ season held together by Bolt

Will Bolt was not exactly the popular choice when former Texarkana College president Frank Coleman named him head coach of the Bulldogs baseball program in the spring of 2007.

The selection took a lot of folks by surprise, primarily because they felt Chad Massengale had earned the position by coaching the Bulldogs to the Region XIV tournament finals on an interim basis. It was Massengale and volunteer assistant Jake Beasley who saved the team from a possible internal implosion after head coach James Mansinger resigned under fire.

That they weren’t rewarded for their work was cause for resentment toward Coleman directly, and Bolt indirectly, although the latter came highly recommended by three former Bulldog coaches, all of whom he had worked for and learned from at either Nebraska or Texas A&M.

Two years later the Bolt hiring is a good example that the best decisions are made from the head, not the heart. And while we may never know how the Massengale/Beasley combination would have fared at TC, there is little question Coleman’s choice was a good one.

It was feared Bolt’s hiring would result in the exodus of several players loyal to Massengale and with remaining eligibility. That did happen in a few cases, but Bolt did manage to convince local recruits David Allday, Lance Marvel and Zach Fowler to keep their TC commitments.

Bolt’s first team, a mixture of players recruited by Bolt and Mansinger the year before, made the Region XIV tournament as the third seed. The Bulldogs lost two straight games in the double-elimination event, finishing 33-23 overall.

Of the current Bulldogs, only third-year sophomore Thomas Watson, Marvel, Zach Fowler and Justin Fowler weren’t signed by Bolt. Allday officially came on board after Bolt was hired.

Those four, along with returnees Trey Buck and Gip Hendrix, and sophomore transfer Joaquin Hinojosa, played integral roles in the Bulldogs’ march to the No. 1 seed in the East Zone this spring as did a strong freshman class headed by surprising mound ace John Stilson from Texas High.

It turned out to be just the right mixture for an East Zone championship, but the most intriguing part of the story was the route the Bulldogs took to the title.

Because of an unusually wet spring and the drainage problems at George Dobson Field, Bolt was forced to take his team on the road for the first six conference doubleheaders.

Counting a loss to Paris Junior College in a rain-suspended twin bill, the Bulldogs welcomed last-place Lon Morris to Dobson Field on April 1 for their first home series with a 6-5 record. It marked the first home appearance for TC since the final of a four-game series with Coffeyville, Kan., Junior College on Feb. 22.

A sweep of Lon Morris and completion of the suspended game-win over Paris made the eventual road record 9-5, but the home-field advantage in the second half of the season didn’t quite work out the way Bolt had hoped.

A sweep of Panola College, which gave TC a 3-1 edge over the team it eventually tied for the title, was followed by three straight splits, leaving the Bulldogs close but still behind both Panola and Navarro College, the only team with a 3-1 advantage over Texarkana.

But the Bulldogs won their last seven games, and final-day splits by Navarro and Panola pushed TC ahead of the former in the standings and gave it the tie-breaker over the latter.

“The way we won it speaks of the resiliency of this group of kids,” Bolt said. “We didn’t make excuses; we said we had to take care of business, got hot down the stretch, and that’s the way it played out. We won at the right time of the year.”

TC’s assent to the conference throneroom in just his second season at the school was no surprise to Bolt, who bears an incredible on-field resemblance to current Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn, the man generally given credit for resurrecting the Bulldog program a couple of decades ago.

“We talked to the kids when we recruited them and when they first set foot on campus about our three goals,” Bolt said. “We want to first win the conference championship, then the regional title, then the national championship. When you talk about it enough to make it important, then you can do it.”

Evidently the Bulldogs are taking Bolt at his word, and while much tougher roads lie ahead, it’s clear the choice Coleman made two years ago was a wise one.

PARIS, Texas—Mission accomplished.

In a game that took more than a month to complete, Texarkana College wrapped up the East Zone’s No. 1 seed in the upcoming Region XIV tournament by outlasting Paris Junior College, 14-8, Tuesday at Hub Hollis Field.

The win boosted TC’s overall record to 36-13, and its conference mark to 20-8, tying the Bulldogs with Panola College for first place. But since Texarkana won the season series from Panola 3-1, the Bulldogs receive the top seed from the East. They will play Galveston College, the fourth seed from the South Zone, in the first round of the tournament that opens May 9 at Blinn College in Brenham.

Tuesday’s game actually started March 25 but was suspended in the fifth inning with TC holding an 8-2 lead. Both teams had identical scoring innings of two runs in the eighth and four runs in the ninth when the game resumed.

David Allday, who had homered in the original game, his second of the game with a runner aboard in the eighth. The Bulldogs first baseman finished with four hits in six at-bats, driving in seven runs.

Joaquin Hinojosa was 5 for 6, including a double and triple and four runs batted in. John Stilson had a double and single, and Austin Atwell, Brian Ellis and Gip Hendrix two singles each in the Bulldogs’ 20-hit attack.

Tanner Bailey, who originally started the game, went back to the mound at the restart and pitched through the eighth inning to record his eighth win in nine decisions. Colton Reavis pitched the ninth.

The Bulldogs were originally scheduled to play a home game against Arkansas Baptist College on Tuesday, but it was put on hold for the makeup game with Paris. TC coach Will Bolt said he will try to reschedule Arkansas Baptist over the weekend.

JACKSONVILLE, Texas—The Texarkana Bulldogs kept their chances alive for the No. 1 seed in the regional tournament with a sweep of Lon Morris Sunday in Region XIV action.

The Bulldogs took the opening game of the twin bill, 10-0, behind a strong pitching performance from John Stilson. In the second game, Texarkana College used a 6-run fifth inning to claim an 8-4 victory. TC improves to 34-13 overall and 19-8 in region action.

Stilson hurled a complete-game shutout and gave up just six hits while fanning seven in the first game.

Jake Rogers’ 2-out grand slam home run in the seventh inning completed the scoring for the Bulldogs. Rogers finished with five RBI on the day.

Trey Buck and Brian Ellis each had a double, and Jordy Snikeris added a 2-run double. Lance Marvel added a pair of hits and an RBI.

In the nightcap, Snikeris drove in four runs on a pair of hits, including a double. David Allday and Joaquin Hinojosa each had two hits and an RBI, and Rogers finished with a triple and a single. Ellis contributed a pair of hits, including a double.

Texarkana looks to secure the top seed Tuesday when they travel to Paris to complete a rain-delayed game, which the Bulldogs lead 8-2 in the fifth inning. A win would give TC the one seed as they hold a 3-1 edge in head-to-head competition over the Panola Ponies, who finished the season with a 20-8 mark in region play.

Doubleheader sweep puts Texarkana in second in East

Wednesday’s Region XIV doubleheader at George Dobson Field was the latest reminder why Angelina College dreads making its annual trip to Texarkana.

The Roadrunners, who haven’t won at Dobson since 2001, will no doubt have that same feeling of trepidation next year after dropping 14-6 and 15-5 decisions to Texarkana College, which moved into second place behind Panola College in the East Zone standings. Panola (19-7) swept league-leading Navarro College (16-8), 9-2 and 5-2, Wednesday.

The Bulldogs (32-13, 17-8) overcame a 7-6 deficit by scoring eight runs in the sixth inning of the opener, then belted out 17 hits, including two home runs by former Arkansas High standout Lance Marvel, to take the nightcap, called after seven innings on the 10-run rule.

“We had a good approach at the plate going all day,” TC coach Will Bolt said. “We used the entire field, hit some balls in the gap and squared up balls on hitters’ counts. It was good to see it carry over from Game 2 against Paris Monday.”

First-game starter Tanner Bailey struggled, giving up the lead on a three-run homer in the fourth inning by Paul Prestera. The Roadrunners (27-21, 13-12) tacked on two more runs in the fifth to take a 7-4 lead, but the Bulldogs got those two back in the bottom of the inning on David Allday’s two-run single.

Then after Joaquin Hinojosa came on to fan Chase Hernandez with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, TC paraded 13 batters to the plate, scoring eight runs on seven hits against three Angelina relievers.

Pinch-hitter Gip Hendrix’s three-run double was the big blow in the rally. Thomas Watson had two hits in the inning and Trey Buck an RBI double. Angelina had one of its four errors in the frame, and allowed another batter to reach first base on a wild pitch following a strikeout.

Watson had three hits, including a double, Buck and Allday had a double and single each, Jordy Snikeris two hits and Allday drove in four runs.

Hinojoso picked up the win, pitching to just one batter. Shane Cole pitched the seventh. Bailey gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

“We needed a stop on the mound in the sixth inning and Hinojosa gave it to us,” Bolt said. “We took the momentum from that into the bottom of the sixth, and probably into the next game.”

Zach Fowler was the recipient of the Bulldogs’ big bats in the nightcap. He went all seven innings, yielding 11 hits, walking two and striking out one.

“Zach was better today; I thought he was really attacking the strike zone and didn’t always get credit for it,” Bolt said. “He just had a different demeanor about him today. In the first game, Bailey couldn’t put anybody away. He’d get ahead and hang a breaking ball or leave a fastball out over the plate, and they made him pay for it. Angelina does that to people.”

The big inning was again the difference in the second game, the Bulldogs scoring four runs in the fourth inning and seven in the second. After Angelina stalled the run-rule ending with two runs in the seventh, the Bulldogs bounced back to score two in the bottom of the frame to end the game.

Marvel was 3 for 4 with the two home runs and three RBI, and Buck added a solo homer, double and single in four at-bats. Watson drove in three runs with a single and triple, Snikeris doubled twice and Hinojosa added two singles.

The Bulldogs travel to Jacksonville to face last-place Lon Morris College Saturday. TC may still have to complete a game at Paris next week if it affects the final standings. If so, the game will be picked up in the fifth inning with the Bulldogs ahead 8-2.

Texarkana College gets sweep over Paris

It took awhile, but the home-field advantage finally took hold for Texarkana College Monday.

After three straight doubleheader splits at home in conference play, the Bulldogs posted a 5-1, 11-5 sweep of Paris Junior College at George Dobson Field, keeping TC’s conference championship hopes alive.

“Both Navarro and Panola split their games last weekend, so we gained a game on both of them,” said Bulldogs coach Will Bolt. “What was good about today was Paris had their two best guys on the mound, and they’re two of the better pitchers in the league as far as numbers go.”

The Bulldogs didn’t exactly rock first-game starter David Carpenter, collecting only three hits off him in five innings and just four for the game. But that was plenty for right-hander John Stilson, who surrendered only an unearned run before tiring in the sixth inning.

But Zach Sneed, who beat TC, 4-1, at Paris earlier in the season, lasted only two innings in the nightcap as the Bulldogs pelted five Dragons pitchers for 16 hits, including the ninth home runs of the season by David Allday and Joaquin Hinojosa.

“I thought we made the most of our opportunities in the first game,” Bolt said. “We did a good job of situational hitting, getting bunts down and a couple of two-strike sacrifice flies. And Stilson did his thing on the mound, commanding the strike zone with two pitches.”

Pitching before several professional scouts, Stilson struck out seven and walked two and was in command from the start. He surrendered three straight 1-out singles in the sixth, but Hinojosa came on with the bases loaded and struck out the two batters he faced, ending the game.

Texarkana made the most of just four hits, taking advantage of five walks by Carpenter and four Dragon fielding errors. The Bulldogs scored three runs on just two hits, an error and a hit batsman. Thomas Watson drove in two runs with a single, and Trey Buck plated the other with a sacrifice fly.

The other runs in the fifth came without benefit of a hit. Carpenter walked the leadoff batter, hit the next, and the Dragons (28-18, 10-13) committed two more errors. Zach Fowler’s sacrifice fly drove in one run. Fowler, Austin Atwell and Jordy Snikeris had the other TC hits, all singles.

Justin Fowler went 5 1/3 innings to pick up the pitching win, allowing three runs, seven hits, striking out two and walking four. Sean Cole, Colton Reavis and Justin Fielden finished up.

“It was good to see Justin battle through some adversity out there,” Bolt said. “He made some good pitches when he needed to, and had some good defensive plays behind him.”

The Bulldogs turned four double plays, two triggered by center fielder Austin Atwell.

Hinojosa had a triple and Allday a double to go with their home runs. Zach Fowler added a triple and double, Trey Buck, Atwell and Jake Rogers a double and single each, Lance Marvel two singles and Watson a double.

The Bulldogs (30-13, 15-8) return to action at Dobson Wednesday against Angelina College.

Texarkana College seems to be reaching the point where it can’t win for losing.

The Bulldogs divided their third straight home series on Wednesday at George Dobson Field, edging Bossier Parish Community College, 2-1, in the first game of the Region XIV doubleheader, but dropping the nightcap, 12-7.

In earlier splits with Navarro College and Northeast Texas Community College, the Bulldogs had to win the second games after losing the openers.

“It was not a very good day. Offensively, we were totally out of our normal approach, chasing everything and not swinging at the pitches we needed to,” said Bulldogs coach Will Bolt after TC managed just 10 hits in the two games. “I thought we got a great effort on the mound in the first game, and it was what we were needing.”

Freshman right-hander Tanner Bailey, who normally starts the nine-inning nightcaps, went the distance in the seven-inning opener, scattering six hits, striking out five and walking two. He also hit a batter. The only run he surrendered was unearned, the result of his own throwing error.

“We moved Tanner to the first game because we just needed a spark and a chance to sweep,” Bolt said. “But we made the same mistakes offensively in the second game as we did the first. We really didn’t play particularly well in any facet of the game all day long, despite the split. I’m not real pleased with the way we’ve played.”

The pitching of Bailey (7-1) was really the lone highlight for the Bulldogs on the day. TC (28-13, 13-8) managed just four hits off Cavaliers starter Alex Garcia in the first game, scoring in the fourth inning when Joaquin Hinojosa was hit in the ribs by a pitch, moved to third on David Allday’s single and scored on Gip Hendrix’s sacrifice fly.

Hinojosa finished the game, but was unable to play in the nightcap due to bruised ribs.

TC’s winning run in the sixth was unearned. Brian Ellis blooped a single to left, advanced on a passed ball, took third on an error and scored on Allday’s long sacrifice fly to left. Allday (2 for 2) and Ellis (2 for 3) had all the Bulldogs’ hits.

Bossier Parish (27-15, 8-12) raked four TC pitchers for 17 hits in the second game. Starter Zach Fowler was roughed up for six runs on nine hits through 4 1/3 innings, but first reliever Shane Cole took the loss after the Bulldogs rallied to tie the game with three runs on as many hits in the fifth.

But the Cavaliers scored three runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings, and relievers Mark Taylor and Jamie Gilley held the Bulldogs to two hits and a run the rest of the way.

Thomas Watson broke up a no-hit bid by starter Wesley Grant with a long solo home run in the fourth inning, and Trey Buck delivered a second run in the frame with a sacrifice fly.

No Bulldog had more than one hit in the nightcap. Kyle Morton was 4 for 5, including a double, for BPCC.

Texarkana College hosts Paris Junior College on Saturday, the doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Never has a mascot better described a player as it did Texarkana College pitcher John Stilson on Friday.

The Bulldogs’ lanky right-hander was a bulldog in the conference doubleheader against Northeast Texas Community College at George Dobson Field, going the distance in the 9-inning nightcap as TC salvaged a split with a 7-5 victory.

The Eagles (27-16, 8-10) scored four runs in the first inning and went on to win the opener, 7-3.

NTCC also scored four times off Stilson in the first inning, and added a solo home run by Adam Boucher in the second for a 5-1 lead, but the freshman from Texas High allowed two hits the rest of the way, finishing with 13 strikeouts and 130 pitches. He fanned the side in the eighth and ninth innings.

“They had my pitches in the first two innings. I was hitting my spots, but every pitch I threw they knew what was coming and they were just sitting back and hitting them,” Stilson said. “But we started changing our signs every inning after that. My arm really feels great. I guess my adrenaline kept me going because I never got tired.”

With the bullpen taxed in the first game and closer Joaquin Hinojosa unavailable after pitching three innings Wednesday, TC coach Will Bolt never hesitated in sending Stilson to the mound in the ninth, despite his high pitch count.

“John hadn’t played shortstop in a while, and we really had been montoring his throws,” Bolt said. “And he hadn’t gone above 100 pitches all year, so he had a lot of bullets today that he hadn’t used up this year. He got stronger as the game went on, and we needed him to go deep. We had to go to the pen so much in the first games that we were pretty much out of options.”

The Bulldogs (28-12, 12-7) received a huge break in a 4-run fourth that tied the game. Two runs had already scored on a walk, a double by Austin Atwell and Brian Ellis’s triple, and runners were at second and third with two outs when Gip Hendrix’s ground ball was fielded cleanly by the shortstop. But the throw was evidently lost in the sun by the first baseman and ended up in the visitors’ dugout with the tying runs scoring.

After Stilson worked out of a bases-loaded, 1-out jam in the Eagles fifth, the Bulldogs took their first lead of the day in the sixth. Losing pitcher Jared Mata walked Atwell, wild-pitched him to second and Hinojosa rolled a single through the middle that was stopped by the shortstop to prevent the run scoring. But, with two outs, Mata uncorked another wild pitch, and Atwell scored easily.

The same scenario occurred in the eighth when Trey Buck drew his third walk of the game and eventually scored on a wild pitch by Will Bathe.

Jon Houston’s 2-run double was the big blow in the Eagles’ first when they batted around. Brian Ellis walked and scored on still another wild pitch by starter Nathan Ball in the bottom of the inning. Ellis and Atwell finished with two hits each for TC. Boucher homered and singled for NTCC.

First-game starter Justin Fowler didn’t not retire a batter, yielding four runs on three hits and two walks. Greg Noble and Zach Cates had RBI singles, and another scored on a double-play ball thrown by reliever Ty Moore.

Jake Atwell’s RBI single made it 5-0 in the third, but Hinojoso belted his eighth homer to left with two on in the bottom of the inning to bring the Bulldogs within two. But that was as close as they would get, stranding 10 runners.

“We were into the game. The problem was when we got men on base we tried to do too much,” said Bolt. “Instead of trying to hit the ball up the middle, we were lifting the ball against the wind. That’s not going to work. We fought back with the home run, but we just changed our approach with men on base after that.”

Wes Schill, Atwell and Noble had two hits each for the Eagles. Ellis and Hendrix added doubles for TC.

“We need to start winning both games,” Bolt said. “At the end of the day one and one is just average. We have to find a way to put ourselves back in position to win those first games and take those sweeps.”

The Bulldogs are scheduled to host non-conference foe Tyler Junior College in a single 9-inning game Monday afternoon.

TC wins Game 2 behind Watson

When it comes to runs batted in, Thomas Watson will gladly trade quality for quantity.

For the second time in three crucial games the Texarkana College third baseman produced a bases-loaded hit in the final inning that under normal circumstances would have meant multiple RBIs.

Instead, he was credited with singles on both occasions, the latest capping a 9-8 Bulldogs come-from-behind win over Navarro College in the second game of a Region XIV doubleheader at George Dobson Field.

Eastern Conference leader Navarro (25-11, 12-4) won the opener, 5-3, behind the complete-game pitching of Teddy Nowell.

It looked like it might be a sweep when the visiting Bulldogs took an 8-7 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning with closer Logan Chitwood on the mound.

But Brian Ellis drew a leadoff walk and raced to third base when Joaquin Hinojosa’s hard shot went through the first baseman’s legs for an error, the fourth in the game for Navarro. A walk to David Allday loaded the bases, and Jordy Snikeras’ RBI single to right tied the game.

One out later, Watson smashed a 1-2 pitch over the left fielder’s head, driving home Hinojosa with the game winner.

“I looked terrible on the swing before the hit,” said Watson, a sophomore from Paris. “I just took the same approach I did against Panola, and it worked out.”

The win prevented a 4-game sweep by Navarro, and kept the Bulldogs within striking distance of first place.

“Obviously, we would have liked to won that first game, but credit these kids for sticking around when it looked like that second game was going to get away from us,” said TC coach Will Bolt. “It keeps us in the race. I think if Navarro had got that game, we would be playing for second place. Now we still have a chance to get the one seed.”

TC led early, and the game was tied at 2-2 after four innings before Navarro chased starter Tanner Bailey with a 4-run fifth, highlighted by 2-run home runs by Jason Shepard and Clayton Farbat.

It was 7-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth when Texarkana (26-11, 11-6) tied the game with four runs. Watson, who was 4 for 5 with a triple, had a 2-run single, Zach Fowler plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Austin Atwell singled home the fourth.

Bolt brought closer Hinojosa (5-2) in with one out in the seventh, and he yielded a run in the eighth on Cameron Dullnig’s RBI single.

Watson and Jake Rogers, the 8-9 hitters in the lineup, combined on a 7-or-8 performance with five RBIs. Rogers, the former Pleasant Grove standout who walked on at TC, was 3 for 3 with his second home run and an RBI double.

“I’m not at all surprised about Jake because he’s a great teammate, and he’s waited patiently for his opportunity,” Bolt said. “He got it in this game, and he made the most of it. He’s been swinging a hot bat, and he’s going to continue to get more playing time.”

Atwell and Hinojosa also had two hits and Snikeris drove in two runs. Joey Fuda had three hits for Navarro, and Caleb Marx also homered.

In the opener, TC scored three runs in the third inning for a 3-2 lead, but managed only three hits the rest of the way off the left-handed Nowell, who finished with a 5-hitter. None of the runs he surrendered were earned.

Atwell had an RBI single in the third inning that started with Lance Marvel’s base hit. Ellis, who later doubled, had a sacrifice fly in the inning. Snikeris also doubled for the Bulldogs.

Left-hander Zach Fowler threw 75 pitches in three innings, leaving with the lead. But three relievers couldn’t hold it, Shane Cole taking the loss.

Texarkana College hosts Northeast Texas Community College on Friday, the doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.

Texarkana College’s sweep of last-place Lon Morris College last Wednesday likely didn’t raise many eyebrows among its Region XIV rivals. But Saturday’s twin wins over East Conference leader Panola College no doubt opened some eyes.

The Bulldogs’ 5-4, 8-6 twin wins at George Dobson Field—the first game in extra innings—pulled Texarkana within a half-game of the Ponies in the conference race, and magnified the advantage TC has in playing all but two of its remaining games at home, where it has lost only once all season.

And Saturday’s sweep over the nationally 10th-ranked Ponies showed the Bulldogs have to be considered a candidate for the league title.

“The thing about Panola is they make you beat them,” said Bulldogs coach Will Bolt. “They make all the plays defensively, and they don’t give you anything. They made us beat them and we did.”

And in a way that should boost the team’s confidence for coming game. Two clutch RBI hits by Thomas Watson sparked the come-from-behind win in the opener, and four sixth-inning runs in the nightcap enabled the Bulldogs to withstand a 3-run rally by Panola in the seventh.

The second game is usually nine innings, but by conference rule, is changed to seven if the opener is extra innings.

Game 1

Blanked on three hits through five innings by Panola ace Aaron Wilkerson (7-0, 1.91 ERA), Texarkana (26-10, 10-5) cut the visitors’ 4-0 lead in half when Joaquin Hinojosa followed a leadoff walk to Austin Atwell with his seventh home run to left-center.

David Allday and Jordy Snikeris added singles, ending Wilkerson’s day. But reliever Travis Reagan uncorked a wild pitch, setting up Watson’s base hit to left, tying the game.

After TC closer Hinojoso wiggled out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the top of the eighth with a 4-6-3 double play, the Bulldogs followed suit when right-hander Tim Emmott walked two batters and hit another in the bottom of the inning. Panola went to its fourth pitcher, Cory Thomas, but Watson drilled his first pitch just inside the third-base bag to drive in Allday with the game-winner.

“I always look for a fastball away on the first pitch,” said Watson, a sophomore. “That way I can adjust to an inside pitch, and on a breaking ball I’m already sitting back because I’m looking for the outside fastball. The first time I hit a fastball, and the second time a breaking ball.”

Panola (28-9, 11-5) built its early lead with the long ball, Matt Juengel belting a first-inning solo shot and former Hooks High School standout Brandon Choate a 2-run blast to left in the third. It was Choate’s second homer of the season.

Johnathan Baker’s double off reliever Shane Cole made it 4-0 in the fourth. But Cole, who relieved starter Justin Fowler with a runner on second, allowed no more hits, struck out five and walked none until giving way to Hinojosa (4-2) in the seventh.

Watson had three hits and Hinojosa two for TC. Baker and Jared Myrick led Panola with two each.

Game 2

Brian Ellis’ 3-run homer, his second, in the first inning gave TC a lead it would never relinquish, but the Ponies pulled within 4-3 in the sixth before the Bulldogs sent nine batters to the plate, scoring four runs. Allday’s 2-run single capped the rally.

Colton Reavis relieved starter John Stilson with one out in the top of the sixth and worked out of a jam, but Bolt inserted Hinojosa in the game in the seventh, and Panola reached him for three runs on two hits and a walk, Diego Morales doubling home two runs.

“Colton did a good job in the sixth, but I thought Joaquin would come in and shut them down,” Bolt said in explaining his move. “But he walked the leadoff batter and it got him in trouble. John (Stilson) didn’t have his best stuff, but he kept us in the game until we could score more runs.”

Atwell and Snikeris had three hits each, Ellis homered and singled, Trey Buck doubled and singled and Jake Rogers had his first collegiate home run, a solo shot in the second inning.

Morales was 2 for 2, both doubles, for the Ponies.

Considering the date, David Allday might have had to pinch himself to determine if his performance Wednesday at George Dobson Field was an April fool joke.

It wasn’t, much to the chagrin of Lon Morris College, the victim of Allday’s three-home run, 15-runs-batted-in assault in Texarkana College’s 25-7, 17-1 doubleheader sweep.

“I really don’t know what was going on. It was just one of those days, I guess,” said Allday, who went 5 for 6 with 10 RBIs in Game 1. “I was seeing the ball good, and I was sitting back waiting on slow pitching. My confidence is up because I’m seeing the ball good. And it’s good to be back home.”

That sentiment was shared by Bulldogs coach Will Bolt, who saw his team score 42 runs and collect 38 hits in the team’s first home games since Feb. 22.

“It helps just getting into a routine,” Bolt said. “We actually got to practice outside here yesterday, and we actually haven’t had an outdoors practice in three weeks. And we had a really good team practice yesterday with a lot of energy despite the fact we had been on the road Sunday and Monday. The familiarity helps, and this is a good hitter’s park.”

Allday had a grand slam in TC’s 8-run first inning in the opener. He also had a solo blast in the second and followed it up with two singles and a 2-run triple. In his final at-bat, he hit a screamer through the first baseman’s legs, reaching on the error.

Allday’s bat wasn’t the only one smoking in the opener. John Stilson was 4 for 5 with a double and triple, Joaquin Hinojosa 3 for 3 with a home run and Brian Ellis 3 for 5 with a double and triple. Austin Atwell had three hits and scored four runs, as did Hinojosa. One of Jordy Snikeris’ two hits was a 2-run homer, and Gip Hendrix also had two hits.

Recipient of the hitting barrage was left-hander Zach Fowler (6-2), who took a 12-1 lead into the fourth inning before surrendering six runs and seven hits. Brittan Diamond, Ty Moore and Colton Reavis finished the game with a scoreless inning apiece.

“The fourth was going to be Zach’s last regardless,” Bolt said. “I was going to get him out of there after it. I wanted to see him compete and pitch through rather than go get somebody else. He’s been there for us all year, and he’ll continue to be.”

Lon Morris (3-25, 0-12) made a game out of it for two innings in the nightcap before the Bulldogs (24-11, 8-5) sent 12 batters to the plate in the third, scoring seven runs on just four hits. Bearkats starter Jake Flowers hit three consecutive batters with the bases loaded, forcing in runs.

TC put the game away with a 6-run fifth, capped by Allday’s 3-run shot that soared over the fence in right. The former Texas High standout increased his home run total to seven and his RBI number to 37.

Right-hander Tanner Bailey (6-1) allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked none over five innings. Shane Cole gave up a run on three hits in the sixth, and Diamond closed out with another scoreless inning in the run-rule contest.

“Tanner pitched really well,” Bolt said. “He could have finished, but we wanted to get the bullpen guys on the mound to get used to pitching at home again. We just had some guys that needed to get some work in.”

Brian Ellis had three hits, including a solo homer over the fence in center, to lead an 11-hit attack. Allday had a home run and double in three at-bats, and Trey Buck tripled and singled. Michael Long had a pinch-hit, 2-run double.

The Bulldogs start the second round of Region XIV East Conference play Saturday against front-running Panola College at Dobson Field. The only conference road trip remaining for TC will be Lon Morris at Jacksonville on the final date of the season.

LUFKIN, Texas—Texarkana College’s baseball team split a doubleheader against Angelina College Sunday in Region XIV action.

The Bulldogs gave up a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh inning to drop the first game, 4-3, but responded with two home runs, including a grand slam, and claimed a run-rule victory in the second game, 17-4.

TC scored two runs in the first and added another run in the third to hold a 3-0 advantage until the Roadrunners scored twice in the sixth. Angelina completed the come-from-behind win when Texarkana committed its eighth error of the game on Kenny Allison’s 2-out grounder that brought in the winning run in the seventh inning .

Joaquin Hinojosa and Gip Hendrix each went 2 for 3 with a double, and Jordy Snikeris added an RBI double.

In the nightcap, Hinojosa belted a grand slam in the third inning to extend the Bulldog advantage to 8-0 after two innings. Austin Atwell’s solo homer sparked a 4-run fourth inning as Texarkana cruised to the mercy-rule win.

Atwell added a pair of doubles and a single to finish a perfect 4 for 4 at the dish. Lance Marvel added a pair of doubles and five RBI, and Snikeris and Brian Ellis each had two hits as TC pounded out 17 hits.

Texarkana returns to action today at Tyler Community College.

PARIS, Texas—Texarkana College sophomore Zach Fowler sailed into the sixth inning with a 1-0 lead only to see Paris score four runs—two unearned—and beat the Bulldogs in Wednesday’s opener at Hub Hollis Field, 4-1.

Texarkana (20-9, 5-4) was leading the nightcap 8-2 going to the fifth inning when the game was stopped because of lightning and rain. The game will be completed at the end of the regular-season.

“Zach pitched well enough to win, but their pitcher matched him,” Texarkana coach Will Bolt said. “We just didn’t do enough offensively.”

Fowler scattered five hits, walked two and struck out seven in six innings. Trey Buck scored TC’s only run in the first after reaching on a single and moving all the way to third on two wild pitches. He scored on Austin Atwell’s grounder.

The Bulldogs got off to a good start in the second game when Texas High alumnus David Allday smashed a 3-run homer. Allday also had a run-scoring single later in the game. Joaquin Hinososa drove in two runs with a double and two singles, while Brian Ellis added a pair of singles.

Freshman Tanner Bailey was on the mound for Texarkana. The Bulldogs travel to Angelina on Saturday.

Paris is 23-9 on the season and 5-4 in conference.

BOSSIER CITY, La.—Texarkana College banged out 29 hits duirng its doubleheader sweep of Bossier City Community College, 19-10 and 11-0, here Saturday.

John Stilson hurled a complete 7-inning 3-hitter in the nightcap, when Lance Marvel belted a pair of home runs. Stilson struck out nine and walked one, and Marvel smashed a 3-run homer in the fifth and a 2-run shot in the sixth.

Joaquin Hinojosa also had a 2-run home run for the Bulldogs (20-8, 5-3) and he added a double. Brian Ellis and David Allday were both 2 for 3 with a triple, and Jake Rogers had a RBI single.

Jordy Snikeris ripped a 2-run home run and a single for TC in the opener, and Trey Buck was 4 for 4 with four RBI. Ellis also had four RBI on his three hits, Austin Atwell was 3 for 4 with three RBI and Allday was 3 for 5.

Justin Fielden picked up the win in relief of Taylor Nichols.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas—Zach Fowler and Tanner Bailey came up with outstanding pitching performances Wednesday when Texarkana College needed them most.

Losers of three of their first Region XIV East Conference starts, the Bulldogs needed a sweep of the doubleheader at Northeast Texas Community College, and got just that.

Fowler went six innings in 7-inning opener, and the Bulldogs scored all their runs in the first inning of the 5-2 victory. Bailey completed eight innings in the 9-inning nightcap, won by TC, 4-1.

Fowler (5-1) scattered five hits, struck out five and walked two in picking up his second straight conference win. Colton Reavis retired all three batters he faced in the seventh.

The Bulldogs gave Fowler all the support he needed in the first inning. Trey Buck reached on an error against starter and loser Jake Atwell, and a single by Austin Atwell put runners at the corners.

Joaquin Hinojosa’s sacrifice fly plated Buck, and Gip Hendrix followed with a double. Atwell, who had stolen second base, stopped at third when it appeared Hendrix’s drive would be caught. David Allday singled through the middle to drive in Atwell, but Hendrix was thrown out at the plate.

After Lance Marvell walked, Ian Gilley doubled to left, driving in two runs, and he scored on a single by Brian Ellis.

Atwell and Ellis were the only Bulldogs with two hits.

In the second game, Bailey (5-1) gave up just two hits, struck out six and walked three, the only run coming on a home run by Cody Causey in the third inning. Hinojosa earned a save in the ninth by striking out the side on 11 pitches.

Buck had a pair of doubles in four at-bats and had two of TC’s seven stolen bases in the game. Jordy Snikeris had two hits and drove in two runs, Gilley stroked a solo homer, his second of the season, and Allday had a double.

“We saw their top two guys, both were left-handed, and the second (Henry Garcia) was really good,” said TC coach Will Bolt. “We really needed these two wins, and if we can get a split or sweep in Bossier City Saturday, we’ll be in good shape because most of our April games will be at home.”

The Bulldogs (18-8, 3-3) play their fourth conference twin bill on the road Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.

The start of Wednesday’s doubleheader at NTCC was pushed back to 4 p.m.

CORSICANA, Texas—Texarkana College dropped a pair of Region XIV games Monday against Navarro.

TC fell to Navarro, 4-3, in the opening game, and lost the nightcap, 10-8. Texarkana is 16-8 overall and 1-3 Region XIV.

Texarkana held a 2-0 lead after three innings, but Navarro responded with two runs in the fourth and added a run in each of the fifth and sixth, including Joey Suda’s game-winning solo home run.

Gip Hendrix belted a solo home run in the fifth to tie the game. Austin Atwell finished with 3 for 4 with a double.

Shane Cole took the loss for TC.

In the second game, Navarro raced out to a 7-1 lead after two innings and held on for the lead.

David Allday finished with a pair of hits, and Brian Ellis contributed a triple, a double and RBI. Snikeris added three hits and three RBI, and Jake Rogers chipped in with a two-run single as TC pounded out 13 hits.

CARTHAGE, Texas—The Texarkana Bulldogs split their Region XIV opener against Panola Tuesday at Jim Reeves Memorial Field.

The Bulldogs (16-6, 1-1) claimed a 3-2 victory in the first game but dropped the nightcap, 4-0.

Joaquin Hinojosa drove in all three runs for the Bulldogs, including a solo home run in the fourth and a RBI double in the fifth. Hinojosa also earned the save, working two scoreless innings in relief of winning pitcher Zach Fowler.

David Allday added a pair of hits for Texarkana College.

The Ponies (17-4, 1-1) added their runs on Matt Juengel’s 2-run homer in the fourth to tie the game.

Texarkana recaptured the lead for good in the fifth on Hinojosa’s double.

In the second game, Texarkana managed just two hits against starter Cam Sokalski and reliever Travis Reagan.

Jordy Snikeris and Fowler each had a double for Texarkana’s only hits.

Panola scored a pair of runs in the second and third innings.

BATON ROUGE, La.—Gip Hendrix’s bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning proved to be the difference in the opener as Texarkana College edged Chipola (Fla.) College, 13-12, at Baton Rouge Community College’s stadium.

The second game was called after eight innings with the game tied at 9.

Hendrix drove in four runs in the first game, smacking a 3-run home run in the second inning. David Allday, who leads TC in hitting, had three singles, Jordy Snikeris a double and John Stilson a 2-run double.

Taylor Nichols went the first five innings, leaving with an 11-1 lead, but the Bulldogs bullpen couldn’t hold the lead. Joaquin Hinojosa (3-1) picked up the win, pitching the last two innings.

Austin Atwell led TC’s 8-hit attack in the second game with a double and two singles. Hendrix had a 2-run homer, Brian Ellis had two doubles, driving in two runs, and Jake Rogers and RBI single.

Stilson pitched the first five innings for TC, Zach Fowler hurled a scoreless sixth, and Ty Moore and Colton Reavis finished up with an inning apiece.

The same two teams play another doubleheader today starting at noon.

SHREVEPORT, La.—The Texarkana College Bulldogs split a pair of games Sunday at the Fairgrounds Stadium.

Texarkana (14-5) lost in extra innings to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, 4-2.

TC scored a run in the first, but the Norseman tied the game in the third and took the lead with a run in the sixth.

Bulldog David Allday belted a solo home run to even the game in the eighth inning. Allday finished the contest 2 for 5.

The Norseman pushed across a pair of runs in the 11th inning to secure the victory.

Joaquin Hinojosa took the loss for the Bulldogs. Justin Fowler started the game before being relieved by Taylor Nichols in the sixth.

In the nightcap, Texarkana pounded out 13 hits to claim a 10-6 victory over Weatherford College.

Lance Marvel finished a perfect 3 for 3 at the dish, and Thomas Watson, Gip Hendrix and Allday each finished with a pair of hits and a RBI. Hendrix smacked a solo home run in the sixth inning to make the score 4-2.

Tanner Bailey added a hit and three RBIs.

John Stilson worked seven innings to notch the win, improving to 4-0 on the season. Ty Moore closed out the game in relief of Stilson.

WILBURTON, Okla.—David Allday clubbed a game-winning three-run homer in the seventh inning of the first game, and Joaquin Hinojosa smacked a grand slam in the nightcap to spark Texarkana College to a sweep over Eastern Oklahoma State College, 9-7 and 9-2, here Tuesday.

The Bulldogs have won eight straight games and extended their record to 12-3.

In the opener, TC trailed 7-6 before Allday ripped his homer over the left-centerfield fence. His first home run of the spring came with one out. Allday also had a run-scoring single.

The Bulldogs had three other homers—all solo blasts—in the opener. Trey Buck, John Stilson and Lance Marvel had the four-baggers. Stilson and Marvel had two hits in the game, with Stilson also stroking a double.

Hinojosa (2-0) picked up the win in relief.

TC continued to flex its home run muscles in the second game. Buck hit a two-run homer, his fourth this year, in the fourth inning and Hinojosa ripped his slam in the sixth. Both came with two out.

The Bulldogs finished with 11 hits, with Hinojosa having two singles in addition to his home run. He finished with five runs batted in.

Marvel added two hits, including a double, and Allday had a double.

Taylor Nichols (1-0) went six innings to pick up the win. Colton Reavis pitched the last three frames to get the save.

Texarkana College returns to action Saturday in Dyersburg, Tenn., where the Bulldogs will face St. Louis Community College-Meramec and Dyersburg State Community College in a pair of single games.

The Coffeyville Ravens came a long way (a nine-hour trip from Southeast Kansas) just to get walloped in four games by the Texarkana College Bulldogs this weekend.

The Bulldogs outscored Coffeyville, 49-9, which included an 18-0 victory Sunday at George Dobson Field.

Texarkana banged out 14 hits, including home runs by Tanner Bailey and Ian Gilley, to back up two-hit pitching. John Stilson pitched the first five innings, allowing both hits, while striking out seven and walking three. Four relievers pitched an inning each to preserve the shutout.

“We have been playing really well the last six games,” said Texarkana College coach Will Bolt. “I have been real pleased with the way we have approached the games. Our defense and pitching has been good, and we’ve been getting a lot of big two-out hits to keep innings alive.”

The Bulldogs (10-3), winners of six straight, will be on the road Tuesday, playing Eastern Oklahoma in a doubleheader.

Texarkana scored in all but two innings of its eight at-bats, including a five-run sixth inning.

The Bulldogs got a few breaks early to score twice in the first inning.

With one out and a runner on second, David Allday reached on an error. Jordan Monday then balked home Austin Atwell with the first run.

Gip Hendrix then singled and stole second, putting runners on second and third. After the second out, Thomas Watson had an infield hit when the second baseman slipped after backhanding the ball.

After loading the bases on walks in the second inning, and failing to score, the Bulldogs scored three runs in the third inning after two outs.

After a walk to Watson and a single by Brittan Diamond, Jordy Snikeris doubled down the leftfield line, driving in two runs. Devin Day singled Snikeris home with the third run.

Coffeyville got its only two hits in the fourth inning on singles by Danny Marcuzzo and Eli Dykens. It was the only time in the game the Ravens had advanced a runner past first base.

Texarkana continued to pull away with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the fifth for a 10-0 lead.

The Bulldogs put up five runs on the scoreboard in the sixth on just three hits. All the runs scored after two outs, and Diamond on base with a single.

Day drew a walk, Trey Buck singled, and Atwell walked to load the bases. Bailey then blasted his home run over the rightfield wall for a grand slam and a 15-0 lead.

Texarkana closed out its scoring with three runs in the seventh. Gilley led off the inning with a home run over the centerfield wall and Atwell drove in the final two runs with a single.

Taylor Nichols, Colton Reavis, Gilley, and Joaquin Hinojosa pitched an inning each and did not allow a base hit and gave up just two walks.

Four players (Atwell, Hendrix, Diamond, and Snikeris) had two hits each.

It was hard for Texarkana College coach Will Bolt to find fault with his Bulldogs after their doubleheader sweep of Coffeyville Community College Saturday at George Dobson Field.

“You have to go out there and play your game, and I thought we did today,” said Bolt after TC’s 12-3 and 7-1 wins. “We did a better job of executing our offense—we got some bunts down and stole some bases. It was a tough day to hit because of the wind, but I thought we did a good job of hitting line drives to all fields, and we got some big, two-out hits.”

TC also got good pitching from starters Tanner Bailey and Justin Fowler and relievers Shane Cole and Ty Moore. Coffeyville managed just five hits in the twin bill.

“Neither one of the starters had their best stuff nor their best command either,” Bolt said, “but they got some ground balls when we needed double plays. Justin had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning, but it didn’t seem like because of his walks (5). But they competed well to get to the fifth and sixth innings. And the guys who came out of the pen did a nice job.”

The Bulldogs pounded out 14 hits in the opener, putting the game out of reach with a 7-run fourth inning, six of them coming with two outs.

David Allday, who was 4 for 5 and drove in four runs, delivered a 2-run double in the inning and Lance Marvel, Jordy Snikeris and Austin Atwall had run-scoring singles, the second hit of the frame for Atwall, who led off with a single. Trey Buck’s triple to right field scored Atwall.

TC sent 13 batters to the plate in the big inning, wiping out a 3-2 Ravens lead.

Buck, Lance Marvel, Atwell and John Stilson added two hits each for the Bulldogs (9-3), who won their sixth straight game at Dobson after an opening loss to Temple College. Pleasant Grove freshman Jake Rogers had his first collegiate hit, a double, in his only at-bat.

Bailey (3-0), a freshman right-hander from Magnolia, Ark., went 4 2/3 innings, allowing all three runs, striking out four, walking three and hitting a batter. Cole gave up just one hit, walked one and struck one over the final 2 1/3 innings.

Brandon Elmore had a 2-run single for the Ravens.

In the nightcap, the Bulldogs scored two runs in each of the first, fourth and sixth innings, and Fowler made them stand up, allowing just two hits—both in the fifth—while striking out five. The New Diana sophomore evened his record at 1-1.

The Bulldogs had eight hits in the second game, three by leadoff batter Buck, who also scored twice. Atwell had a 2-run single as did Allday, giving the former Texas High standout six RBIs on the day. Marvel and Thomas Watson had a double each.

Brad Stanlely’s swinging bunt was the Ravens’ first hit in the fifth inning, and he eventually scored on a clean single by Blake Hageman.

TC played without injured starters Brian Ellis (back) and Joaquin Hinojosa (leg), but their replacements, including Ashdown freshman Devin Day, picked up the slack.

“Two guys who hit right in the middle of our order ware unavailable today,” Bolt said. “They probably could have played had we needed them to, but the way the weather was today I just didn’t want to chance it. It gave us a chance to play some different people, and I tell these guys every day it’s going to take all 24 of them to win a championship. That’s what we’re striving for.”

The Bulldogs and Coffeyville wrap up their 4-game series with a 9-inning contest slated for a noon start today at Dobson. Stilson is scheduled to start on the mound for TC.

College Baseball: Bulldogs take 12-5 victory

Left-hander Zack Fowler pitched six strong innings and struck out nine and Taylor Nichols cracked a two-run homer and double to lead Texarkana College to a 12-5 victory over the Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College Ravens Friday at George Dobson Field.

It was the Bulldogs’ third straight win and improved their season record to 7-3. They now have won seven of their last nine games.

Fowler (2-1) was touched for four runs over six innings. He walked only one. Justin Fielden and Brittan Diamond supplied relief help.

Texarkana College, meanwhile, banged out 15 hits against two Coffeyville pitchers. Besides Nichols, the Bulldogs’ leaders were Joaquin Hinojosa with two hits, including a double, to drive in two runs; Gip Hendrix with two hits, including a double, to knock in a run; John Stilson with a two-run double; and Trey Buck with two hits in four plate appearances.

Hector Acosta smacked a two-run homer and Ben Blades a solo blast for the Ravens (1-1).

The teams will play two seven-inning games starting at noon today, and then close out the series with a single, nine-inning game at noon Sunday. Starting pitchers for the Bulldogs today will be Tanner Bailey and Justin Fowler.

BRENHAM, Texas—Texarkana College used a five-run inning to win two games Saturday.

The Bulldogs scored five runs in the fifth inning to knock off Navarro, 7-1.

TC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but Navarro cut the Bulldogs lead in half with a run in the fourth. Texarkana’s offense exploded in the fifth inning to secure the victory.

Taylor Nichols finished with a double and two RBI to pace the TC offense. John Stilson threw a complete-game six hitter, allowing no earned runs. Stilson fanned eight and allowed no walks.

Texarkana College used a five-run sixth inning to drop Wharton, 7-1.

After Wharton pushed across a run in the fourth to take the early lead, TC evened the game up in the fifth win a run.

The Bulldogs exploded for five runs the following frame to seal the victory.

Trey Buck and Nichols each had a double.

Tanner Bailey earned his second win of the season, hurling a complete game and striking out six.

The wins improve Texarkana College’s record to 6-3 on the season.

Sophomore Watson’s home runs inspire Bulldogs to battle back

LUFKIN, Texas—Texarkana College (5-1) rallied from an early 8-1 deficit here Thursday to beat Galveston College in eight innings, 12-10.

Sophomore Thomas Watson of Paris, Texas, sparked the Bulldogs’ comeback with a solo home run in the fifth and a grand slam in the sixth.

Texarkana sent the game into extra innings with two more runs in the seventh, and Houston freshman Brian Ellis plated the decisive run for the Bulldogs in the eighth.

Texas High graduate David Allday had two doubles, scored twice and drove home a run for the Bulldogs, while sophomore Gip Hendrix contributed two singles. Trey Buck hit a solo roundtripper in the sixth.

Transfer Joaquin Hinojosa was the winning pitcher for Texarkana, blanking the Whitecaps the final two innings. Freshman Taylor Nichols started on the mound for the Bulldogs, and was followed by Shane Cole, Brittan Diamond, Ty Moore and Hinojosa.

Tyler Fiebrich had a home run for Galveston, and Zach Boulanger suffered the pitching loss in relief.

TC is scheduled to play in Brenham today against Grayson College at 5:30 p.m. and Blinn at 8.

John Stilson is fooling a lot of people, including his coach.

The Texarkana College freshman, and former Texas High baseball standout said he still isn’t 100 percent from shoulder surgery he had last year, but that wasn’t evident Sunday at George Dobson Field where the Bulldogs swept a doubleheader from Eastern Oklahoma, 6-0 and 13-2.

Stilson was 3-for-3 at the plate in the opener with a 3-run homer, and was the winning pitcher in the nightcap after throwing the first five frames in the 9-inning contest.

“If he’s not 100 percent, he’s got me fooled,” Texarkana coach Will Bolt said. “His performance is a tribute to his competitiveness. Eastern Oklahoma is known for its hitting, and John shut them down pretty good.”

Texarkana (3-1) only trailed once Sunday, that coming in the first inning of the second game when Stephen Hagen lined a two-run homer over the wall in center. Stilson would retire the next 11 batters, but a throwing error in the fifth got him in a one-out, bases-loaded jam.

The hard-throwing (clocked in low 90s) righthander escaped the threat with a strikeout, and bouncer back to the mound. He left the game after throwing 75 pitches.

“I slowed everything down today,” Stilson said. “Yesterday I was overreacting to everything. Today I just trusted my hands when hitting.”

Freshmen Ty Moore, Colton Reavis and Justin Fielden followed Stilson to the mound, blanking the Mountaineers (0-3-1) on one hit.

Five Eastern Oklahoma hurlers did not enjoy as much success. They were shelled for 12 hits, including solo roundtrippers by sophomores Gip Hendrix and Lance Marvel. Hendrix, who also homered in the opener, had a double and two singles to go with his second four-bagger of the day, while Marvel lined a ground-rule double that hit the bag at third, and landed over the fence near the Bulldogs’ dugout.

The Oklahomans were still leading 2-0 when Texarkana took advantage of three Mountaineer errors in the fourth to capture the lead.

David Allday reached safely on an infield miscue, scoring moments later when Hendrix lined a double over the centerfielder’s head. Hendrix continued to third on a throwing error by the catcher, scoring on Marvel’s double. Another infield error and walk loaded the bases, followed by a two-single to left by pinch-hitter Austin Atwell.

Ian Gilley had two hits, scored twice and drove home two runs for the Bulldogs in the second game, with Allday contributing a two-run triple.

A solo home run by Atwell in the first inning was the only run Tanner Bailey needed in the first game. The 6-foot-7 righthander scattered three hits, walked one and struck out eight in six innings. Future Aggie Joaquin Hinojoso retired the Mountaineers in order in the seventh.

Texarkana led 3-0 after the first frame. Hinojoso reached on a fielder’s choice and scored ahead of Hendrix’s towering home run to left.

Southpaws Phillip Parcell and Caleb Walker held the Bulldogs in check after that until the sixth.

Back-to-back walks to Thomas Watson and Allday staged Stilson’s monstrous blast over the left field fence.

“This kind of performance is great to see,” Bolt said. “It’s good to see that we can bounce back from things like yesterday’s loss to Temple. We could have felt sorry for ourselves. Someone said, ‘losing early stands for learning.’ We didn’t execute our game plan, but we showed we’re capable of putting big innings together.”

Eastern’s only scoring opportunity in the opener came in the fifth when Bryce Killingsworth reached on an error, and raced to third when Jesse Santo delivered an opposite-field single to right on a hit-and-run. Bailey’s seventh strikeout quelled the threat.

Texarkana has five road games scheduled later this week, starting with Galveston on Thursday in Lufkin.

Texarkana College salvages split with Temple College

Texarkana College took advantage of opportunities it missed in the first game and ended Temple College’s 7-game winning streak with a 13-4 rout in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader at George Dobson Field that ushered in the start of the season for the Bulldogs.

TC led unbeaten Temple College off the hook in the early stages of the 7-inning opener, falling 5-3, before finally getting the bats going in the 9-inning second game.

“Our execution wasn’t there in the first game,” said TC coach Will Bolt. “They made three errors in the game, and we had them on the ropes. If we execute our offense we had a chance to have a couple of big innings, but we don’t get a bunt down, and we miss a hit-and-run sign and get thrown out by four steps. We just didn’t get it done offensively in the first game.”

The nightcap was a different story. The Bulldogs took advantage of seven walks by cracking out 10 hits, including four home runs to back Zach Fowler’s strong 6-inning stint.

“Zach kind of set the tone in the second game,” Bolt said. “We’re still trying to find it offensively in the first three innings without a hit, but Zach matched our zeros to give us a chance. He pitched really well, but I thought he got a little tired at the end.

“I was very encouraged by the way we played defense (no errors) for the first time out. Pitching and defense is going to win any day, and the hitting is going to come around. It was good to see the way we faced adversity in the first game and responded in the second.”

TC returns to Dobson today for a 2 p.m. twin bill with Eastern Oklahoma. Tanner Bailey and John Stilson will be the starting pitchers.

Temple 5, Texarkana 3

Temple snapped a 3-all tie with a pair of runs off reliever Colton Reavis in the sixth inning. One-out singles by Pedro Maldonado and Doug Oney, this one a perfect bunt to the left of the mound, and a passed ball put runners at second and third.

Darren Crabtree’s hard ground-out to first base drove in the tie-breaking run, and Oney scored on a wild pitch before Reavis picked up his second strikeout to end the inning.

Early home runs by Thad Zantec and Crabtree in the first two innings staked the Leopards to a 3-0 lead before TC tied it in the third.

Trey Buck singled to left to open the inning and was off and running when Austin Atwell smashed a double to the gap in right-center chasing Buck home. One out later, Joaquin Hinojosa singled, putting runners at the corners. Atwell scored on David Allday’s groundout to third base, and Hinojosa brought home the tying run when the Temple shortstop booted Lance Marvel’s ground ball for his second error of the game.

Justin Fowler overcame a rocky start to go five innings for the Bulldogs, allowing seven hits, striking out four and walking one while throwing 85 pitches. Ty Moore pitched a scoreless seventh for the Bulldogs.

“I thought Justin kept us in the game and gave us a chance to win,” Bolt said. “He got stronger as the game progressed.”

Texarkana managed only five hits off Paul Spinn, who went the distance on the mound, fanning four and walking three. Watson was the lone Bulldog with two hits, while Atwell’s double was the only extra-base hit.

Maldonado was 3 for 3 with a double for the Leopards.

Texarkana 13, Temple 4

Hinojosa’s 2-run homer to right center broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth inning, and after Ryan Meade’s solo shot made it 2-1 in the fifth, the Bulldogs put it away by scoring eight runs over the next two innings.

TC took advantage of four walks by reliever Stevie Kirks to score five times in the fifth, then got a leadoff homer from Allday and a 2-run shot by Watson in the sixth to make it 10-2. Bucks 3-run blast put the final three runs on the board in the eighth.

Zach Fowler threw 82 pitches over six innings, walking five and fanning four. He gave up just three hits. Shane Cole and Justin Fielden pitched a scoreless inning each before Brittan Diamond yielded two harmless runs in the ninth.

“All three of my pitches were working, and I thought I threw pretty well,” Fowler said. “I’m a ton stronger than last year, and when I get my arm in shape I should be able to go deeper into games.”

Buck and Allday added singles to their homers, and Brian Ellis doubled and singled to lead the Bulldogs’ assault. Meade and Ryan De La Rosa had two hits each for Temple.

Will Bolt’s first full recruiting class goes on display this weekend amid high expectations after a strong fall campaign.

“We’ve been practicing 2 1/2 weeks, and we’re ready to go,” said Bolt, whose first Texarkana College baseball team finished 33-23 and bowed out of the Region XIV tournament in two games. “I think we would have been ready if we had started last weekend.”

Although the Bulldogs have only two pitchers—right-hander Justin Fowler and lefty Zach Fowler (no relation)—Bolt feels a strong freshman class will make pitching one of the team’s biggest strength.

“As far as returners go, the two Fowlers are the only guys back on the mound,” Bolt said. “We had Gip Hendrix and Thomas Watson throwing in the regional elimination game last year, and they’re not going to pitch this year. That speaks to the depth we’re going to have on the mound. Even though most are freshman, they are quality arms.”

The Fowlers will pitch Saturday’s home doubleheader against Temple, a 6-0 team that played in the 2006 JUCO World Series. Sunday’s starters against Eastern Oklahoma, a top 25 team this season, at Dobson Field will be freshmen Tanner Bailey, a 6-7, 240-pounder from Little Rock, and John Stilson of Texas High. Taylor Nichols of Magnolia, Ark., is also in the mix of possible starters. All are right-handers.

In fact, Zach Fowler is the lone southpaw on the staff.

“Those five are the ones we’re looking at as regular starters,” Bolt said. “It will play out during the regular season as to who we’re going to depend on for the four conference spots.”

Sophomore Joaquin Hinojosa, player of the year in the Golden Valley Conference in California last year, will be the closer as well as the starting right fielder.

“Joaquin is from Texas and wanted to get back here,” Bolt said. “He called (former TC coach) Rob Childress at Texas A&M and asked him to recommend a school, and he sent him here. He’s committed to A&M next year.

Making up the TC bullpen are former Paris High School standout Colton Reavis, who missed his senior year with a torn ACL but was an early TC signee, Brittan Diamond of Sulphur Springs, Canadian Shane Cole, Justin Fielden from Gilmer and Ty Moore from Liberty High School in the Austin area.

The only other left-hander, Justin Parsons of Jasper, Texas, had Tommy John surgery on his elbow and will redshirt this season.

“Overall I feel good about our pitching,” Bolt said. “We’ve got two experienced guys who were in the rotation from Day 1 last year coming back to lead the staff. And the guys we’ve got in the bullpen are going to be able to match up with anybody in our league from a competitive standpoint.

“Our bullpen was our weakest point last year. We had no depth at all and ran out of options early. But I really think this year these guys will come out with good stuff and throw strikes. That’s what you need from relief pitchers.”

Several position players return. Former Arkansas High standout Lance Marvel hit .370 with six home runs last year, David Allday of Texas High had a good year at first base, second baseman Trey Buck of Crosby, Texas, led the Bulldogs in hitting, third baseman Watson of Paris was an all-conference selection, and DH/outfielder Hendrix was the conference freshman of the year, batting .380 with seven home runs.

Bolt said Marvel’s bat will be in the lineup, whether he plays behind the plate, in the outfield or in the DH role. He will share the catcher’s role with freshman Jordy Snikeris of Austin, who is an excellent defender and thrower, according to his coach.

Allday won the first-base job from talented freshmen Nichols and Taylor Bailey, a left-handed hitter with power.

Buck, who moved to shortstop last year when Justin Coats was injured, will play mainly at second, but will move back to short when the starter there, Stilson, goes to the mound. Buck is backed up by Ian Gilley from Fort Smith Northside. Gilley can also play short and third base.

Bolt calls Stilson, who got a late start in the fall after shoulder surgery, “a vacuum at shortstop. He makes the routine plays, then makes some others that make you say ‘Wow.’”

Backing up Watson at third is Diamond, termed a “throwback guy, hard-nosed, gritty player,” by Bolt.

“We’ve got quite a few guys who can play more than one place in the infield,” Bolt said. “They’ve got good chemistry as a group.”

Bolt expects his outfield to be one of the best around. Freshman Austin Atwell from Allen, Texas (Wylie High School) is the team’s fastest runner, and Houston freshman Brian Ellis from Houston is not far behind.

“They both cover a lot of ground and have strong, accurate arms,” Bolt said. “Ellis actually led us in hitting in the fall at around .500. He’ll probably be my three-hole hitter.”

Hinojosa will bat cleanup for the Bulldogs.

“He’s not going to hit a lot of home runs, but he can do a lot of things with the bat,” Bolt said. “He’s also an excellent outfielder.”

Zach Fowler, Moore and freshman Devin Day from Ashdown will back up the outfield starters.

Brad Flanders is back from Bolt’s coaching staff last year. He will coach first base and work with the pitchers. Newcomer Travis Wendte, a former professional player, joined the staff the spring semester. He will work with the pitchers in the bullpen.

Bolt expects a strong schedule that includes defending national champion Grayson College and 2007 title holder Chipola College will prepare his team for conference play.

“Based on what we saw in the fall, Panola College has a lot of returners and will be tough, and I’m sure Navarro added a couple of guys at the break,” he said. “Northeast Texas is going to be a lot better, and Angelina is strong every year.

“There should be five or six teams battling for four playoff spots, and I like our chances. Our goal is to win the league, go to the World Series and win a national championship. That will be the goal as long as I’m here.”

Texas High’s success over the past couple of years has not gone unnoticed by Texarkana College baseball coach Will Bolt.

Bolt added two more Tigers to his 2009-10 roster this week, signing first baseman Hunter Allday and left-handed pitcher Randall Fant to letters-of-intent.

“Hunter can obviously play first base, but we’ve toyed with the idea of making him a catcher because of his build,” Bolt said. “Anytime you have a left-hander who can hit the way he does, it’s a bonus if he can catch.

“Right now he’s penciled in at first base or a corner outfield position. He’ll play as long as he produces at the plate.”

Bolt sees Fant, No. 3 in Texas High’s starting rotation last year, as a diamond in the rough.

“He’s a 6-4 left-handed pitcher who has touched 90 miles an hour, and those guys don’t grow on trees,” he said. “As he matures and puts on more weight, it could be a blessing in disguise that he’ll be a little more fresh when he gets here because he didn’t throw that much at Texas High last year.

“Randall has a lot of upside. He’s got a good curve and can throw it for strikes. It could be an out-pitch for him. As long as he keeps working and getting better, the sky’s the limit for him.”

The two new signees join former Tigers John Stilson and David Allday, Hunter’s brother, on the Bulldog roster.

Fant is the son of Burl and Sharon Fant, and Allday’s parents are Star and Ed Thompson and Bill and Tara Allday.

Rising From The Ashes, Recent injuries can’t keep Brittan from his beloved Diamond

Two weeks before Christmas is usually a happy, carefree time for many college students.
Students are wrapping up tests and presents while getting ready for almost a month-long break from rigors of academia.
Brittan Diamond, a Sulphur Springs graduate, was no different that his fellow students at Texarkana College. The 19-year-old was taking life easy, living on a scholarship.

Then came the fire. Who knew frying chicken could be so hazardous.
"I was trying to fry chicken and really didn't know how," Diamond admitted. "The cooking oil in the pan got too hot and we were trying to put it out. It all splashed out and caught me on fire."
Diamond recounts the story without much emotion, but his painful wounds landed him in hospital for five days.
"It burned me on both legs - the biggest burn was on my right thigh and down and my right knee down," Diamond said. "I had a bad place on my left ankle where my shorts stuck when I tried to pull them off when they were on fire."
Amazingly enough Diamond's second degree burns did not require skin grafts and he is told by doctors he shouldn't scar. He even worked with therapy to stretch skin which had grown tight enough to bind his achilles tendon.
The former Wildcat athlete also endured the cleaning and dressing of his burns for several weeks. The second week of January marked the first time he was able to go without any sort of bandages under his clothes.
Diamond returned to Sulphur Springs during his recovery. Several days he had make a trek to Paris for treatment to his wounds. But back in his hometown, he was overwhelmed by the support he received.
"I knew people care about me, but I never knew how many. My phone was ringing and my parents phone was ringing all the time. People came by to visit and they sent meals and stuff," Diamond said. "People at our church, League Street Church of Christ, put me on the prayer list and it was all very nice. It's good to feel that kind of support. It makes me feel blessed now just to walk and do things normal people do."
Diamond was much more than normal at Sulphur Springs High School. A standout in football and baseball, he had choices of scholarships. Some for football, others for baseball, some a combination offer.
In his senior year the pitcher/infielder hit .357 with 17 home runs, 34 hits at the plate. On the mound the 6-foot-2-inch right-hander had an 8-2 record with an earned run average of 1.47 striking out 94 batters in 86 innings.
Diamond was doing well in college, posting a hit in every game of fall ball for the Bulldogs. He was not only hitting well, but posted an earned run average of 2.10 in a relief role. He was using his fastball, curve and a forkball he calls "MacGyver"

The Comeback
Texarkana College head baseball coach Will Bolt is not surprised in the least that Diamond will be back on the roster and ready to play.
"I was at first concerned about Brittan - the person - if he was going to be all right," Bolt said. "When I found out more about the wounds and his condition, I had no doubt he would come back. He is such a fierce competitor, it's just his nature. He's a very tough kid."
Diamond’s injuries did not affect his baseball playing ability, in fact his arm was not touched in the fire, just his legs.
Bolt continued, "We recruited him as a pitcher. He has a good curve and a slider, he attacks from the mound. He could be a starter, but we like the versatility it gives us with him being an infielder and also a relief pitcher and this is just his first year.
"He's a line drive hitter at the plate," Bolt said. "He hits the ball from gap-to-gap, he was really doing well in fall ball. We don't keep stats, because the games are really like practice. But he was consistently getting hits and playing well."
Diamond said it seems like to him that the weeks he spent rehabbing from his wounds went quick. Being injured rekindled his burning despite to get back into his favorite sport.
Diamond has not played baseball since fall ball ended in late October. He's anxious to play now that his burns have healed.
"I am so ready, I just can't even express it. I just love baseball, I really feel at home on a baseball field," Diamond said. "We have a good team, we have a lot of talent. I see us going pretty far."
The Bulldog player said his team is truly a team and not made up of individuals.
"We played some teams with great talent in the fall. But we played as a team and we came out on top against the individuals," Diamond said.
Diamond said having a chance to play baseball now, after weeks of being cooped up recovering from his wounds, has given him a new respect for life.
"Life is a wonderful thing," Diamond said. "You don't want to get carried away with it. You want to have fun, but you also have to be cautious. It's a great thing to just be able to walk and play the game. I am ready to get after it, I have been sitting around so long."
Diamond is happiest when he is on the baseball diamond.
"If I am at the plate, I don't care if I am facing Nolan Ryan, I am determined to get a hit," Diamond said with a laugh. "The same thing is true when I am pitching. I have the ball in my hand and I control the game. It's a good feeling."
Diamond said he would like continue playing baseball after Texarkana College at a higher level. If he is unable to do that, he is working on a business degree to one day join his brother, Chris doing appraisals and land survey work.
LaClaire Diamond is glad to see her son back and ready to rejoin his baseball career.
"I think he may have learned a lot from this experience," she said. "Good things can come from bad situations."
Brittan Diamond will soon be just another student back in the apartments at Texarkana College. He has survived a test of fire and risen from those ashes to chase his dreams in baseball.
Diamond said, "I learned a lot of things the last month or two. I think I will leave the chicken frying to someone else."

Four Bulldogs Chosen for TXNMBCA All-star Game

Four Texarkana College Bulldogs have been chosen to represent Region XIV East in the 2008 All-Star game at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Tx September 25-27. Shortstop Trey Buck (Crosby, TX) (.393 1 HR, 28 RBI), OF Gip Hendrix (Haughton, LA) (.370 7 HR, 48 RBI), Catcher Lance Marvel (Texarkana, AR) (.366 6 HR, 32 RBI), and 3B Thomas Watson (Paris, TX) (.306 6 HR, 33 RBI) have all been selected by conference coaches to attend the event.

“We are pleased to have these players represent Texarkana College in this year’s all-star event,” said TC head coach Will Bolt. “This will be an excellent opportunity for these four sophomores to showcase their skills in front of a large audience of college coaches and professional scouts. They are all very deserving and we wish them the best of luck.”

The four Bulldogs selected are the most for any one team in Region XIV East.

Squad glad Stilson still rubs shoulders with them

LEAGUE CITY, Texas—Jake Rogers had just hit a home run, and John Stilson joined his Red River Credit Union Indians teammates for a celebration at home plate.

That was Stilson’s only public appearance Wednesday at Clear Creek High School’s Wildcat Field during the Tribe’s opening-day win over Houston Milby in the 83rd annual Texas American Legion Baseball tournament. The former Texas High standout will see no more action this summer after having season-ending shoulder surgery last month.

A leader on and off the field during tournament games in June, Stilson continues to be a motivational factor from the bench for the Indians during their bid to reach the Mid-South Regional and American Legion World Series.

“It has really been tough sitting and watching for the past month,” said Stilson, voted MVP and Outstanding Pitcher at the Nashville and Mountain Home tournaments earlier this summer. “I could have continued playing this summer, but my shoulder was getting worse. Doctors tell me I could be back in four to six months as good as new.”

That’s when Stilson hopes to land playing time for his new team, the Texarkana College Bulldogs.

Stilson injured his shoulder during football practice last fall. He was playing defense and making a tackle when it popped out of place. The injury slowed him the remainder of the football season and continued to plague him when he played basketball and baseball for the Tigers.

Stilson’s presence at the Legion tournament has helped Texarkana manager Tom Wacha’s confidence this week, and has him looking ahead to next summer.

“John is quite a kid,” Wacha said. “I didn’t know him well before this summer, and getting acquainted this season has been very rewarding. Every team needs a leader, and when you’ve got a lot of good players that’s hard to figure out. It was apparent from the very start that John was the leader of this team. He’s everything you look for in a player and a person.”

Stilson is eligible to play for the Indians next summer, and the same can be said for several other current Indians. David Allday, D.D. Bigham, Duncan Collins, Randall Fant, Keegan Haas, Kendrick Henderson, Cody Mayo, Jon Phillips and Michael Wacha are all expected back for the 2009 season.

“We have a good team this year and we could be even stronger next season,” Wacha said.

Should the Indians reach Saturday’s championship game, the Indians’ pitching-depth could be a factor. No doubt Wacha wishes he had Stilson to throw that game.

“We don’t have to get to Saturday or Sunday to say we wish we had John Stilson,” Wacha said.

Blinn eliminates Bulldogs, 15-13

MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas—As for as Texarkana College is concerned, the South has already risen again.

The Bulldogs’ two-and-out exit from the 2008 Region XIV baseball tournament was courtesy of South Zone teams, including No. 4 seed Blinn College, which outlasted TC, 15-13, in a near-four-hour elimination game Sunday at Northeast Texas Community College’s Bob Baker Field.

Thus the first season of the Will Bolt regime at TC ended at 33-23. Blinn (25-26) plays at 10 this morning against the loser of Sunday’s late game between Alvin College and Navarro.

And it was late, thanks to Sunday’s 11-inning opener that went to Wharton College over Panola, 8-7, and the TC-Blinn marathon that produced a combined 28 runs, 31 hits, 20 walks and 27 runners left on base.

The game was as crazy as those numbers indicate. Blinn had leads of 6-0 and 11-4 before the Bulldogs took advantage of six walks, a hit-batsman and two hits and three runs batted in by David Allday to score eight runs in the seventh inning to take a 12-11 lead.

But they couldn’t hold it.

The Buccaneers scored once in the eighth to tie it, then three more in the ninth off losing pitcher Thomas Watson, two coming on Matthew Steele’s triple that careened off Anton Garcia’s glove in center field.

Winning pitcher James Brandhorst blanked the Bulldogs in the eighth, but surrendered doubles to Gip Hendrix and Watson and a walk in the ninth before ending the game with a strikeout and the potential tying runs on base.

“We expended a lot of energy getting back into the game,” Bolt said. “We did the best we could to slow the game down a little bit for the guys, but they just got so hyped up in situations where all it took was one more hit to break their backs. We were never-say-die, and that’s kind of what this team’s been about all year long.”

TC starter Justin Fowler was hit hard in 5 2/3 innings, including home runs by Layton Hiller and Trey Johnson. Cory Hill surrendered a 3-run homer to the first batter he faced, Zakary Leonhardt, as Blinn extended its lead to 10-3.

“Justin didn’t have his best stuff, but the thing about it, he got us into the sixth inning,” Bolt said. “Not a lot of guys can say that after giving up a four-spot in the first two. He mostly pitched behind in the count, but I thought he competed really hard, and he gave us a chance by staying out there until the sixth.”

Texarkana had to make several positions changes during the course of the game, as well as a big one before it. Second baseman Justin Coats was a late scratch with a shoulder injury suffered in Saturday’s first-round loss to Alvin.

“I had him in the lineup, but he couldn’t throw, and I saw him take batting practice, and he wasn’t the same guy,” Bolt said. “It was a physical, and I think a little bit of a mental blow. It hurt, but that’s not what lost us the game.”

Hiller had a lot to do with that, driving in five runs with four hits, including his 15th home run and a triple. Johnson was 3 for 3 with two RBIs, and Steele drove in three with a triple and a single. Travis Cougot had a pair of doubles as the Bucs totaled 16 hits.

Watson and Allday swung the big bats for TC. Watson was 4 for 5, including a 3-run homer that put Texarkana on the board after Blinn had built a 6-0 lead. Watson also had a double and drove home four runs.

Allday had four singles in six at-bats, driving three runs, all in the big seventh inning. Lance Marvel tripled and singled in three official at-bats, and Hendrix had a pair of doubles.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas—Texarkana College kept offensive power Alvin College on the ropes most of the game, but the Bulldogs just couldn’t deliver the knockout punch.

The Dolphins, who entered the game with a hefty .363 team batting average, rallied late to post a come-from-behind 5-3 win over TC in opening-round action Saturday in the Region XIV baseball tournament.

The setback drops the Bulldogs (33-22) into the losers’ bracket, where they will play at 1 p.m. today against the loser of Saturday night’s late game matching nationally-ranked Navarro (45-8) and Blinn (24-25). The double-elimination tournament is being played at Bob Baker Field on the Northeast Texas Community College campus.

TC, the third seed from the North, was shutting down Alvin, the No. 2 seed from the South, 2-0, through 5 1/2 innings.

Designated hitter David Phillips figured in both of the Bulldogs’ runs. He smacked a two-out, opposite-field homer above the 15-foot wall in left field. It was his team-leading 19th round tripper of the season, tying TC’s all-time record set by slugger Reed Stewart in the 1980s. It also was his 64th RBI of the season.

Phillips led off the top of the sixth with another opposite-field blast that ricocheted off the bottom of the wall near the 309-foot sign. He ended up with a double. One out later, Dean Malthouse scored him with a sharp single up the middle for a 2-0 Bulldog lead.

“Our guys competed hard and played hard throughout the game,” said TC coach Will Bolt. “We got some key hits and we kept the pressure on them, but we let them stay close and we didn’t put them away.”

Bulldog pitcher Jason Chowning appeared in command, allowing only four singles through five innings. The Dolphins narrowed the score to 2-1 in the sixth with a leadoff walk, stolen base and two-out single by cleanup batter Chris Herrmann.

The Bulldogs stayed with the hard-throwing Chowning, a 6-foot-3 sophomore who has signed with the University of Oklahoma. It was his game to win or lose.

“Jason had 80 pitches entering the seventh inning, and we were going to keep the ball in his hands,” Bolt said. “He was pitching well and he deserved the chance to keep going and try to close out the game.”

Chowning’s trouble in the seventh mirrored the sixth when he walked the leadoff batter. Following a sacrifice bunt, a throwing error off a slow grounder bounced into the Alvin dugout, allowing the Dolphins to tie the game at 2-2.

Alvin followed with three straight hits, including its only one for extra bases (a double), to grab a 4-2 advantage. TC’s lead had suddenly vanished and momentum clearly had swung to the Dolphins’ side.

“They just got to him (Chowning) in the seventh,” Bolt said. “They’re a very good-hitting ballclub and they had seen him a couple of times, and they came up with key hits.”

Bulldog reliever Zach Fowler also was touched for a couple of hits in the big inning, one scoring a run that was charged to Chowning (5-4). Alvin sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs off six hits and an error.

TC tried to rally in the seventh when leadoff batter Trey Buck singled, stole second and went to third when the catcher’s throw bounced off the second-base bag.

And that brought up Phillips, who had homered, doubled and was robbed of another extra-base hit when the Alvin right fielder made a diving catch in the fourth inning.

The Dolphins replace starting pitcher Taylor Wulf, an eight-game winner, with Brett Kinsel. The reliever struck out Phillips on three pitches.

Phillips, however, came through again in the ninth. Three walks to Lance Marvel, Buck and Justin Coats loaded the bases with one out. Phillips then grounded out to second, scoring Marvel to close the gap to 5-3. Cleanup hitter Gip Hendrix, who was hitless in five trips to the plate, grounded back to the pitcher, ending the game.

“We certainly had our chances, but we just didn’t come up with enough timely hits when we needed them,” Bolt said.

David Allday, Buck and Phillips had two hits each for TC, which must fight its way back in the losers’ bracket.

“Now we need a four-game winning streak, but we’re going to take it one game at a time and play hard and see what happens,” Bolt said.

Angelina beat Wharton, 6-1, in Saturday’s opening game.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas—Texarkana College slipped in at the wire as the No. 3 seed from the East Zone for the Region XIV baseball tournament that starts today, but it didn’t help much in determining the Bulldogs’ first-around opponent.

TC (33-21) and Alvin, No. 2 seed from the South, are scheduled to meet at 1 p.m. today at Bob Baker Field on the campus of Northeast Texas Community College. Alvin (33-14) was the season-long leader in the South Zone before being overtaken by San Jacinto in the final week.

“There’s not a lot of difference between Alvin and San Jac,” said TC coach Will Bolt. “Alvin is very offensive; the first five guys in their order are as good as any in the conference. And they like to run. They want to put pressure on you from the first pitch.”

Bolt likes his team’s attitude heading into the tournament.

“I feel like we’re playing our best baseball right now,” he said. “We played pretty well over the last three weeks with our backs to the wall. We’ve been a lot more consistent lately in all facets of the game.”

Bolt is counting on his top two starting pitchers—right-handers Jason Chowning and Justin Fowler—to go deep in the first two games.

“We need them to eat up some innings to set up the rest of our pitching,” he said. “It they can keep their pitch count down and give us seven innings, then we should be in good shape for the rest of the tournament.”

Dean Malthouse will catch Chowning today. Around the infield will be David Allday at first base, Justin Coats at second, Trey Buck at shortstop and Thomas Watson at third. From left to right in the outfield will be Gip Hendrix, Josh Gill and Lance Marvel. David Phillips is the designated hitter.

Other games today will match East No. 2 seed Angelina College (33-14) and Wharton (25-25, South No. 3) at 10 a.m., South No. 1 San Jacinto (42-12) and East No. 4 Panola College (33-21) at 5 p.m. and East No. 1 Navarro College (45-8) and South No. 4 Blinn College (24-25) at 8.

Should TC win, the Bulldogs will play at 8 p.m. Sunday against the Blinn-Navarro winner. A loss would put them against the loser of that game at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The tournament runs through Tuesday or Wednesday with the winner qualifying for the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

College Baseball: Six Bulldogs earn places on all-conference team

Six Texarkana College Bulldogs have been named to the Region XIV East Zone all-conference team.

Gip Hendrix was named Freshman of the Year, while sophomores Justin Coats of Texarkana, David Phillips and Dean Malthouse, and freshmen Trey Buck and Thomas Watson were selected all-conference.

Malthouse finished second in the East Zone batting race with a .411 average that included 12 doubles and 10 runs batted in.

Coats hit .359 with five doubles, four triples, four home runs and 22 RBIs.

Phillips batted .343 with 12 doubles, and led the team with 10 home runs and 36 runs batted in.

Buck was third overall in the conference with a .404 average. He hit 14 doubles, scored 24 run an drove home 16, while drawing 18 walks from his leadoff position and striking out only four times.

Watson, a redshirt freshman from Paris, batted .346 with six doubles, four home runs and 19 RBIs.

The Bulldogs take on Alvin Community College at 1 p.m. Saturday in the first round of the Region XIV tournament at Northeast Texas Community College’s Bob Baker Stadium.

PARIS, Texas—The majority of Texarkana College’s hits came in the nine-inning nightcap as the Bulldogs split a doubleheader with Eastern Oklahoma at Hub Hollis Field.

TC (33-21) dropped a 2-1 decision in the opener after managing just one hit, but the Bulldogs banged out 20 hits to back six pitchers in an 18-6 Game 2 rout.

Justin Coats accounted for all of Texarkana’s offense in Game 1 on a solo home run in the fourth inning. Gip Hendrix took the loss.

Josh Gill had a pair of solo homers in the second game, Hendrix added a solo shot and David Phillips had a two-run homer, double and four RBIs for the Bulldogs.

Gill finished 4 for 5, Trey Buck was 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs, Coats was 2 for 4 with a double and four RBIs, Dean Malthouse was 4 for 6 with three doubles, and Zach Fowler had two hits and two RBIs.

Logan Schamberg belted a grand slam for Eastern Oklahoma, and Cody Wilson picked up the win for TC, which scored in each of the first six frames.

Justin Coats set a school record Monday in Texarkana College’s pair of victories over Eastfield at George Dobson Field.

Coats finished the doubleheader with seven hits, including three triples to run his season total to eight for a new school record. The Bulldogs took the opening game 9-1 and cruised to a 10-1 victory in the nightcap, improving to 32-22.

David Allday belted a grand slam home run in the third frame of the first game, and Lance Marvel made it back-to-back home runs with a solo shot. Gip Hendrix and Thomas Watson each added a pair of hits.

David Phillips had a three-run home run and drove in four RBI, and Hendrix added three hits in the nightcap. Trey Buck and Watson both contributed a pair of hits.

Texarakana College clinched a playoff spot with a sweep of Lon Morris Saturday at George Dobson Field.

With a six-run fourth inning, Texarkana College won the opener, 8-3. The Bulldogs belted three home runs en route to a 14-4 victory in the nightcap.

The teams were tied at 2-2, at the end of three innings before Justin Coats grand-slam home run highlighted the Bulldogs six-run fourth inning in the opener.

David Allday and Lance Marvel led off the inning with singles and Josh Gill drove in the first run with a single. Trey Buck then beat out a bunt to load the bases.

Coats then slammed relief pitcher Adam Leggett’s pitch over the left-field wall for a home run and a 7-2 lead. The final run came on a single by Gip Hendrix and an RBI single by Dean Malthouse.

The teams traded home runs in the first inning with Brad Cochrane hitting one for Lon Morris and winning pitcher David Phillips tied it at 1-1 with his shot to left field.

Texarkana went on top, 2-1, in the second and Lon Morris tied it up again, 2-2, in the third.

The Bulldogs (30-20, 16-12) banged out 10 hits with Malthouse and Gill leading the way with two each. Cochrane paced the visitors’ seven-hit atttack with the home run and three singles.

Cochrane gave Lon Morris a quick lead in the nightcap after doubles by Tell Ross and Cochrane. Cochrane later followed with two more hits, making it seven straight for the day.

Texarkana got the run back in the second on singles by Malthouse, Zach Fowler, and Marvel, and took the lead with an unearned run in the third.

The Bulldogs added two more runs on three hits in the fourth for a 4-1 lead. Marvel blasted a one-out home run, followed by a single by Allday, a double by Trey Buck, and sacrifice fly to right by Coats.

TC exploded for five runs in the eighth to run rule Lon Morris in the second game.

Phillips had a grand slam home run in the sixth, and Thomas Watson had a two-run blast in the five-run eighth. Watson finished with three hits and two RBI. Marvel had a solo shot in the fourth.

Allday added four hits for the Bulldogs.

There have no doubt been bigger wins in Texarkana College baseball history, but none that was needed more than the Bulldogs’ 7-6 victory over Navarro College in Wednesday’s second game at George Dobson Field.

Battered 17-7 in the opener, TC survived the nightcap as closer Cody Hill put down a Navarro uprising in the ninth inning. Texarkana’s first win over the Region XIV East Zone champions allowed the Bulldogs to maintain a one-game lead over Panola for the final playoff berth with two games to play. Panola split a home doubleheader with third-place Bossier Parish.

“That was a big-time, gut-check win right there,” said a relieved TC coach Will Bolt. “That’s a win that can lead to many, many more in a row. I was proud of the way we battled after we couldn’t stop them in the first game.”

Right-hander Justin Fowler checked Navarro’s leading bats on eight hits, leaving with a 5-3 lead after six innings despite being struck on the wrist of his pitching arm by a first-inning line drive.

“I thought it was broken,” Fowler said. “I couldn’t even squeeze Coach’s hand. But I got on the sideline and threw some, and it loosened up.”

Fowler was denied the victory when Brett Parsons homered in the top of the seventh inning after Jason Chowning’s third-strike wild pitch allowed what would have been the third out to reach first base.

But Chowning, TC’s No. 1 starter, settled down and the Bulldogs regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back doubles by Dean Malthouse and Thomas Watson. They made it 7-5 in the eighth when Justin Coats singled home Josh Gill, who had singled and moved to second on a sacrifice.

Navarro (43-8, 23-3) loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth, and Hill gave up a sacrifice fly to Ross Hubbard to make it a one-run game. But Hill picked off pinch runner Anthony Washington and struck out the next batter.

“Justin Fowler did an outstanding job; he’s come a long way,” Bolt said. “A prime example was when he was hit by the line drive. He never buckled a bit, and came out and attacked the strike zone. Chowning wanted the ball, and it wasn’t perfect for him, but he kept us in the game. And Hill never blinked on the rundown. He got it to the athlete (Coats) and let him run the runner down. It was just a great team win.”

The Bulldogs had 15 hits in the nightcap, including a solo home run and single by Coats and two doubles by Watson. Trey Buck, David Phillips, Gip Hendrix, Malthouse and Gill also had two hits. Parsons had four of Navarro’s 12 hits.

Texarkana made a game out of the opener, pulling within 9-7 in the fourth inning, but the Bulldog bullpen couldn’t slow Navarro’s relentless bats. The visiting Bulldogs scored eight unanswered runs to put the game out of reach.

Most of the damage was done by the long ball. Navarro hit five home runs, three of them by Scott Livingstone, who finished with eight runs batted in. Zach Grichor and Caleb Marx hit solo homers.

TC managed 12 hits, 11 off Navarro’s No. 1 starter Bryan Bingham, who still pitched five innings to improve to 11-0 on the season. Hendrix hit his sixth homer in the third inning and Phillips his 14th in the fourth, both with one runner aboard.

But the first game was all about Navarro’s bats. The Bulldogs cranked out 17 hits, including three each by Grichor, Livingstone, Hubbard and Marx.

TC starter Zach Fowler lasted just 3 2/3 innings and yielded eight runs, seven earned. Relievers Cody Wilson and Zach Gryder were treated similarly by NC’s torrid hitters. Coats tripled and singed twice in four at-bats to lead TC at the plate. Hendrix had a single to go with his home run, and Gill, who recently committed to play next year at Louisiana-Monroe, doubled twice, driving in a run.

The Bulldogs can clinch first-place by sweeping last-place Lon Morris on Saturday at home.

With series remaining against first-place Navarro College and last-place Lon Morris—all at home—Texarkana College could have made it easy on itself with a sweep of Panola College Saturday at George Dobson Field.

Now if they are to qualify for the Region XIV tournament, the Bulldogs will have to it the hard way after blowing early scoring opportunities in a 4-3, second-game loss to the Ponies.

David Allday’s walk-off RBI single with one out in the bottom of the seventh gave TC and left-hander David Phillips a 2-1 win in the opener.

So, instead of a 3-game lead over Panola (29-18, 12-12) with four East Zone games to play, the Bulldogs (27-19, 13-11) hold a scant one-game edge over the Ponies in the battle for the fourth playoff spot.

“We had the opportunity to really make it tough on them (Panola),” said TC coach Will Bolt. “We got the walk-off hit in the first game, and I thought we took the momentum into the second when we got the three-run homer (Phillips) in the first inning. But then we kind of sat on the lead.”

Much of the credit for Panola can go to Carthage right-hander Kory Cleveland, who came on with two outs in the second inning due to an injury to starter Travis Reagan. Cleveland allowed just one hit over the next 6 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking two.

“He did a good job working his fastball to both sides of the plate,” Bolt said. “He didn’t have overpowering stuff, but we just didn’t do a good-enough job at the plate. He gave us pitches to hit, but we just got underneath them. You have to hit line drives, and we hit too many lazy flyballs.”

Phillips’ 13th homer of the season over the center field wall with two aboard in the bottom of the first came after a two-out error kept the inning alive.

The two-out drive scored Trey Buck, who had singled, and Justin Coats, who had walked. But Lance Marvel’s single in the second and Buck’s second hit in the fourth were all the Bulldogs could muster the rest of the way.

It appeared the three first-inning runs would be all that were needed for starter Jason Chowning, who breezed into the seventh with the lead before Panola put together four hits to tie the game. Former Hooks standout Brandon Choate started the rally with a single to left, and scored the first run.

Josh Gill came on with the score tied and kept it that way by retiring the two batters he faced, but he gave up a leadoff double to Chase Wier to start the eighth and took the loss when Wier eventually scored on a groundout off reliever Cory Hill.

“Chowning deserved to win,” Bolt said. “We just didn’t get him any runs early when we had the right guys up. We just didn’t get it done.”

Phillips got it done in the opener, scattering five hits, including a solo home run by Mason Denson, tying the game on the first pitch of the top of the seventh inning.

But with one out in the bottom of the inning, Dean Malthouse singled down the right-field line and Thomas Watson was hit by a pitch. Allday then hit the first pitch from loser Scott Copeland on the ground between third base and shortstop, and Malthouse scampered home with the game winner.

Lance Marvel’s sacrifice fly scored Malthouse from third base with the game’s first run in the fifth inning.

Phillips gave up five hits, struck out three and walked one. Chowning surrendred six hits, fanned seven and walked two in the nightcap.

“I thought we pitched well and played good defense today,” Bolt said. “Our pitchers kept the ball around the zone and we made some good plays in the field. We just didn’t get the timely hits.”

Watson was 2 for 2 with a double in the opener. Zach Fowler also had a double.

Panola ends the season with 2-game series against second-place Bossier Parish and seventh-place Northeast Texas Community College.

PARIS, Texas—Texarkana College improved its playoff prospects Wednesday with a sweep over Paris.

The Bulldogs took the opening game, 8-4, and cruised to an 8-2 victory in the nightcap. TC improves to 26-18 overall and 12-10 in conference action.

David Phillips had a two-run double, and Trey Buck added two RBIs to lead Texarkana College to a victory in the first game. Justin Coats contributed a double. Zach Fowler earned the victory.

Justin Fowler notched the win for the Bulldogs in the second contest, and Justin Coats finished 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Gip Hendrix had a pair of hits and two RBIs, and Dean Malthouse had two hits.

TC returns to action Saturday with a doubleheader against Panola.

LUFKIN, Texas—Texarkana College snapped Angelina’s 11-game conference winning streak Wednesday.

The Bulldogs pounded out 20 hits in their 13-7 victory in Game 2. Trey Buck and Thomas Watson each had a home run, and Gip Hendrix finished 3 for 5 at the plate. Justin Coats added a triple, a single and three RBIs. Lance Marvel added three hits, and David Allday contributed a pair of hits.

Corey Hill picked up the win on the hill in relief of Justin Fowler. The Bulldogs rallied for five runs in their final at-bat to pull away from the Roadrunners, and Watson nailed it down in the ninth.

Texarkana College (22-17, 8-10) dropped the opening game, 6-5. Watson finished with three hits and two RBIs, and Marvel added two hits, including a double. Hendrix had a pair of doubles, and Buck finished with two singles.

Josh Gill suffered the loss.

It would be hard to point a finger at any one reason for Texarkana College’s doubleheader loss to visiting Bossier Parish Community College Sunday.

Lack of clutch hitting and pitching, and poor defense all played roles in the 5-0, 6-5 losses at Texas High’s Tiger Field, the second time the Cavaliers have swept the Bulldogs this season.

“We weren’t very competitive, and that’s something I addressed between the games and after the last game,” said TC coach Will Bolt. “Two things you can control are effort and attitude, and I don’t think we did that to the best of our abilities today.”

TC, which has lost six of its last eight games, dropped to 22-17 overall and, more importantly 7-9 in the Region XIV East Zone standings. The Bulldogs trail third-place BPCC (23-16, 10-6) by three games and are in a dogfight with Paris Junior College and Panola College for the fourth playoff berth.

Bossier ace T. J. Forrest, a University of Arkansas recruit, blanked TC in the opener, marking the third shutout in six games for the Bulldogs. Forrest, a hard-throwing right-hander, allowed five hits, struck out six and walked one.

David Phillips gave up just three hits and just one earned run in five innings as the TC defense committed five errors. Thomas Watson was touched for three hits and two runs in the sixth, and Zach Gryder pitched a scoreless seventh.

Lance West had a two-run single and David Morgan a solo homer for the Cavs. Five Bulldogs had one hit each, including doubles by Justin Coats and Dean Malthouse.

Malthouse’s double over the third-base bag followed a lead-off single by Gip Hendrix in the second inning, but the runners were stranded at second and third when Forrest retired the next three batters without the ball leaving the infield.

“To me, that pretty much set the tone for the game,” said Bulldogs coach Will Bolt. “We’ve got runners at second and third with nobody out and guys coming up who had driven in a ton of runs. But we don’t get the job done. I don’t think we had any fight in us after that point.”

Hendrix’s two-run double to right field gave Texarkana its first lead of the day in the first inning of the nightcap. But Bossier Parish scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings off TC ace Jason Chowning, who struggled with his control, walking seven and hitting a batter in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out six and allowed four hits.

Josh Gill came on to get the final out on a back-hand stab by third baseman Thomas Watson, who threw out pinch-hitter Jacob Rhodes with the bases loaded.

The Bulldogs took Chowning off the Hook with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Hendrix tripled home Coats, who had singled, then scored on Malthouse’s double, all coming in the first inning of relief by left-hander Moses Munoz. But the next two batters struck out, standing Malthouse at second.

Two TC errors contributed to Bossier’s three-run sixth that put the Cavs ahead to stay. Joey Ford tripled in one run, then scored on an RBI single by K. W. Smith, who advanced on two wild pitches and scored on one of the errors.

Cody Wilson came on to pitch two scoreless innings, and closer Cory Hill did the same in the ninth.

“Wilson did a great job out of the pen,” Bolt said. “He kept them where they were at and gave us a chance. I thought for the most part, Gill did a good job and, while Chowning didn’t have command of his pitches, to his credit he pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the fourth.”

TC crept within one when David Phillips lofted a solo home run high over the right-field bullpen in the seventh, but the Bulldogs went quietly in the eighth and ninth innings.

Phillips, Henderix and Coats each had two hits for TC, as did Ford and Smith for Bossier Parish.

It was a case of missed opportunities for Texarkana College as the Bulldogs dropped a 2-1 decision in its opening game against San Jacinto Saturday at Spring Lake Park.

TC rallied back against the Coyotes in the nightcap to post an 11-10 win in 12 innings for the split.

The Bulldogs (22-15, 10-5) host Blinn College (30-9, 15-3), which leads the Region XIV South Zone, in another doubleheader today at 11 a.m.

FIRST GAME

San Jacinto 2, Texarkana 1

The Coyotes took advantage of two big errors in the fourth inning for its only runs, while the Bulldogs missed several scoring opportunities. TC stranded nine runners on base, wasting a strong pitching performance by Lacey Lang.

A sophomore right-hander, Lang struck out 10 and allowed just three hits. Both runs were unearned, due to the two errors in the Coyotes’ two-run, fourth.

In the Coyotes’ fourth, Tasha Rotramel led off with a single and Janet Rendon reached on an error.

Brittany Boren sacrificed the runners to second and third. Winning pitcher Kelsey McClain hit a slow roller to first and the throw home was high, and both runners scored on the play.

Texarkana’s only run came in the bottom half of the fourth on a home run by Misti Cosby over the centerfield fence.

After the home run, Lang and Roxanna Holley singled and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with just one out. But McClain retired the next two batters on a groundout and strikeout.

The Bulldogs missed another great opportunity in the sixth. A base hit by Lang was followed by an error and a walk to load the bases with one out. Again, McClain got out of the inning without further damage.

SECOND GAME

The visitors took a 5-0 lead with two runs in the first inning and three more in the second, knocking out TC starter Jessica Upchurch. Lang came on in relief and went the rest of the way.

Texarkana fought back with a single run in the third and added two more in fourth to pull within, 5-3.

San Jacinto took a 6-3 lead with a run in the top of the fifth before the Bulldogs bounced back to tie it up with three runs in the bottom half.

Upchurch led off the fifth, reaching on an error and Haley Nix followed with a single. Cosby ripped a single to right and when the ball got past the rightfielder, both runners scored. With one away, Lang blooped a hit over the shortstop to drive in Cosby with the tying run.

Each team added a pair of runs in the sixth to keep the scored tied, 8-8. Nix drove in the first run with a double to centerfield and Cosby’s single tied the game.

Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.

San Jacinto went on top with two runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Brittany Boren and a throwing error by the pitcher on the next batter allowed Boren to score.

The never-say-die Bulldogs fought back with two runs on two hits to tie the game again, 10-10.

With one away, Upchurch struck out, but reached when the ball got past the catcher. Nix followed with a single and Cosby drove in both runners with a double to right-center.

JACKSONVILLE, Texas—Texarkana College had to settle for a split with last-place Lon Morris Wednesday, bouncing back for an 18-5 victory in the second game after a 4-0 loss in the opener.

The Bulldogs are 22-15 overall and 7-7 in the Region XIV East Zone.

Michael Russo blanked TC on six hits in the opener. It was the second straight series that the hard-hitting Bulldogs, who lead the zone in hitting, have been shut out.

Zach Fowler took the loss, giving up seven hits and all four runs in four innings. Josh Gill struck out four in two innings of relief.

Gip Hendrix doubled and singled, Justin Coats had two singles and David Phillips a double for TC.

TC pounded out 16 hits in the second game, but trailed 3-2 after six innings. But the Bulldogs scored six runs in each of the seventh and eighth inning, the seventh highlighted by Hendrix’s 3-run home run and a 2-run blast by Gill. Justin Coats had a solo homer in the first inning.

Justin Fowler went seven innings, striking out six and walking one, to pick up the win. Thomas Watson pitched the eighth and Cory Hill the ninth, neither surrendering a run.

Coats led the way at the plate with four hits in five at-bats, including his home run and a triple. He drove in three runs. Hendrix drove in seven runs with his home run and two singles, Gill had two singles to go with his homer, Phillips and Trevor Rainey had RBI doubles and Dean Malthouse a double.

Lon Morris finished the day at 15-24 and 2-12.

Texarkana starts the second round of zone play Saturday, hosting Bossier Parish Community College at noon.

CORSICANA, Texas—Navarro dealt Texarkana College’s conference title hopes a blow Saturday by sweeping TC, 7-0 and 7-3.

Jared Rogers went the distance on the mound for Navarro in the opener, scattering seven hits. Justin Howard and Jeff Jones both hit two-run homers in the second as the host Bulldogs exploded for six runs to take command.

David Phillips was the losing pitcher, while Trey Buck led TC (20-14, 6-6) at the plate with a double and single. Justin Coats and Trevor Rainey had doubles for Texarkana.

Texarkana claimed an early 1-0 lead wth a single run in the first inning of the nightcap, but fell behind 4-1 after six innings in the 9-inning contest.

Garrett Larsen threw the first seven innings for Navarro to get the win, with Tanner Chitwood getting the save. Kyle Livingstone homered for the winners.

Jason Chowning suffered the loss on the mound, while Phillips homered for TC. Dean Malthouse had two singles for Texarkana and David Allday added a double.

Texarkana will be back in action Monday at home against Tyler Junior College.

Zach Fowler scattered eight hits in Game 1, fanned six and walked one to earn the win for the Bulldogs (20-12).

David Allday ripped a two-run home run and double to finish 3 for 5 for TC, Thomas Watson also belted a homer, Trey Buck was 3 for 4 with a double, and Lance Marvel had a double and single.

David Phillips’ three-run homer in the second game went for naught, as did Buck’s 5-for-6 performance, including two doubles. Dean Malthouse was 3 for 3 in the loss.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas—Texarkana College’s bats exploded for 38 hits, including 18 doubles, in Wednesday’s doubleheader sweep over Northeast Texas Community College at Eagle Field.

The Bulldogs (17-10, 4-2) backed Jason Chowning’s complete-game 3-hitter with 14 hits in the 9-2 win in the first game, then had season highs in runs (19) and hits (24) in the 19-4 nightcap.

Chowning (2-2) struck out seven and walked two, with both runs he surrendered being unearned. Zach Fowler went six innings in the nightcap, fanning nine and walking two.

David Phillips had seven hits in at-bats on the day, all of them doubles. He was 3 for 3 with three runs batted in the opener, while Lance Marvel smacked a home run and double, Fowler a triple and single, Gip Hendrix a double and single, David Allday two singles and Trey Buck a double. Allday and Hendrix drove in two runs each.

Phillips drove in five runs with four doubles in five at-bats in the nightcap. Dean Malthouse was 4 for 4, including three doubles, and Josh Gill was only a single shy of hitting for the cycle, slamming a 2-run home run, double and triple in four at-bats.

Buck had three hits, including two doubles, Jared Washington a double and single, Allday two singles and two RBIs and Trevor Rainey a double.

The Bulldogs jump right back into Region XIV action today at George Dobson Field, hosting Paris Junior College at noon. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday but was switched due to Easter weekend.

Jason Chowning hurled a three-hitter in Game 1 but took the loss after the Cavaliers rallied for three runs late and held off the Bulldogs in the seventh.

David Phillips ripped a solo home run for TC (12-9, 0-2), Trey Buck had a double and single, and Gip Hendrix and David Allday added a double each. Allday also had a RBI.

Bossier Parish banged out 17 hits off six Bulldog pitchers in the nightcap.

Larry Phillips belted a homer and single for TC, and Justin Coats and Allday added a hit each.

Texarkana College picked up another pair of wins Sunday as the Bulldogs swept Eastern Oklahoma State College, 5-0 and 5-1, at Texas High’s Tiger Field.

TC (12-7) got a complete-game effort from Justin Fowler in the opener and a grand slam home run by freshman Lance Marvel. Three Bulldog pitchers combined to three-hit Mountaineers in the nightcap, when Justin Coats and Zach Fowler also smacked homers.

Justin Fowler allowed just two hits in Game 1, striking out six and walking four. Marvel belted his grand slam in the fourth inning to break a scoreless game and also had a triple. Trey Buck also had a RBI single in the frame.

Coats gave Texarkana the lead for good in the fifth inning of the second game with his 3-run homer and also had a double. Gip Hendrix was 2 for 4 with a double, and Zach Fowler ripped a solo home run in the eighth to go along with his single.

David Phillips pitched seven strong innings. He allowed two hits, fanned five, walked three and allowed an earned run. Josh Gill and Cory Hill each tossed an inning of relief.

COPPELL, Texas—For the second day in a row Texarkana College had to win Game 2 to manage a split with Seward County Community College Sunday.

The Bulldogs posted an 8-4 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader after the Saints pulled out a 6-5 victory in eight innings in the opener Sunday. TC won 12-7 and lost 2-0 Saturday.

Justin Coats was 3 for 4 with a pair of home runs for the Bulldogs (9-6) in Sunday’s second game. Coats led off the game with a solo homer and belted a 2-run shot in the fourth inning, helping Texarkana build a 6-1 lead.

Anton Garcia was 2 for 3 with a 2-run blast in the first inning, Lance Marvel was 2 for 3 with a double, and Zach Fowler ripped a RBI double.

David Phillips combined with Cody Wilson and Zach Gryder for the win.

Corey Hill took the opening loss as the Saints scored with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Phillips banged out two home runs and was 3 for 5 in the game. He blasted a 2-run homer in the first and a solo dinger in the seventh to knot the score.

Garcia was 2 for 4 and hit the first of back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning. Trevor Raney followed Garcia with his homer.

Fowler hurled five strong innings before leaving with an 8-1 lead as Texarkana College salvaged the split Saturday with the late win.

Marvel led the Bulldogs at the plate with a double and two singles, while Coats and David Allday contributed a home run and double each. Phillips had a triple and single.

Texarkana’s bats were silent in the opener as Thomas Cruz held the Bulldogs to one hit. The Saints scored the game’s first run in the fifth on a double by Jon Bartlotti, who scored on a single by Caleb Nine.

Texarkana College extended its winning streak to six games Sunday by completing a four-game sweep of Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College at George Dobson Field.

The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the second and third innings to defeat Coffeyville 4-0. TC improved to 7-5 on the season.

David Phillips notched his first win for the Bulldogs, hurling five shutout innings and limiting the Ravens to just five hits.

The Bulldogs scored two of their four runs on sacrifice flies from Justin Coats and Dean Malthouse.

Zach Fowler had a RBI single, and Phillips helped his own cause with RBI. Trey Buck and Gip Hendrix each had a double.

Jake Mitcheltree took the loss for the Ravens, lasting just three innings.

Texarkana College returns to action March 1 at Seward County Community College.

Bulldogs drop Coffeyville behind Fowler

Zach Fowler wasn’t overpowering in posting his first collegiate pitching victory Friday, but his ability to throw strikes drew praise from his Texarkana College coach.

“Zach didn’t have his best stuff, but he was competitive and threw strikes,” said TC coach Will Bolt after the Bulldogs’ 7-1 win over Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College at George Dobson Field. “And he kept his pitch count down by throwing strike one.”

Pitching in frigid weather, the former Liberty-Eylau standout struck out two and walked one, and the only run he gave up was unearned due to his own error in the first inning.

Fowler slipped while fielding Brandon Elmore’s one-out chopper in front of the mound, and threw wide of first from his knees. Elmore advanced on a single by Jason McBride and scored on Zach Johnson’s sacrifice fly.

But the Bulldogs (4-4) took the lead for good in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs on five hits. Trey Buck’s one-out double started the rally, and another two-bagger by Gip Hendrix drove in the tying run.

David Phillips’ infield hit was followed by RBI singles by Dean Malthouse and Lance Marvel.

Josh Gill doubled to lead off the second, stole third, and scored on Anton Garcia’s groundout to third base.

Coffeyville starter Jordan Bartlett blanked the Bulldogs over the next three innings, but Malthouse greeted reliever Nathaniel Rankin with a solo homer with one out in the sixth. Then, following a single by Thomas Watson, Gill slammed his second homer of the season to right field.

“We swung the bats pretty well,” said Bolt, who won his first game at Dobson Field. “We jumped on them early by taking a real good approach at the plate. We put pressure on them the whole game and scored early and late. That will win a lot of games.”

Gill was 2 for 2, and Buck doubled and singled in three trips to lead the 10-hit attack.

The same two teams go at it again today at Dobson in a noon doubleheader. Justin Fowler and Gill are scheduled to pitch for TC.

Bulldogs settle for split in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Texas—Texarkana College started the season off on the right note Saturday by rallying for a come-from-behind extra-inning victory, but North Central College didn’t make the same mistakes in the nightcap as the host Lions salvaged a split with the bulldogs.

David Allday ripped a leadoff home run in the top of the eighth inning of the opener, and winning pitcher Cory Hill shut the door in the bottom of the frame to seal a 4-3 win for TC (1-1).

David Phillips also smacked a solo homer for the Bulldogs, and Justin Coats was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles.

North Central erupted for six runs in the second inning of Game 2 and held off Texarkana’s late heroics.

Dean Malthouse was 2 for 2 with a solo home run for the Bulldogs, Coats chipped in a pair of hits and RBI and Lance Marvel was 2 for 3 with a double.

Kaleb Herren hit a homer for the Lions, and Matt Nilo picked up the win.

Josh Gill took the loss for TC.

Muscle on the mound : Talented pitching staff has Bulldogs coach believing conference championship is within arm’s reach

Will Bolt will no doubt carve his own niche, but for now the first-year Texarkana College coach doesn’t mind comparisons to former mentor Dave Van Horn.

“I would say we have a lot of similarities, but I would never put myself in the same category with him,” Bolt said of Van Horn, who used the TC coaching job as a springboard to bigger things as head coach at Nebraska and now Arkansas. “People have told me that I reminded them of Dave as a player, and others have said I look like him when I’m coaching. I do take a lot of what I do from him. He knows how to get the most of out of his players.”

That’s what Bolt and assistants Justin Seely and Brad Flanders hope to do with their first group of Bulldogs, who open the season with a doubleheader at noon Saturday at North Central Texas Community College in Gainesville.

Bolt comes to TC from Texas A&M, where he was a volunteer coach under former Bulldog coaches Rob Childress and Matt Deggs. He also played for Van Horn at Nebraska and was a volunteer coach for the Cornhuskers.

He takes over a Texarkana College program that overcame the controversial dismissal of head coach James Mansinger last season to win the Region XIV East Conference title. However, only seven players return from that team, and Bolt will build his first squad around that nucleus.

That includes right-hander Jason Chowning, who heads a pitching staff that Bolt feels is the strength of the team.

“Our starting pitching should be our strongest point. Depth wise, we’re going to have to have some guys step up and define their roles as the season progresses,” Bolt said.

Chowning and Texas High graduate Josh Gill, also a right-hander, are scheduled to start on Saturday. Gill was in the starting rotation for conference play last spring.

Former Atlanta standout Logan Puckett, one of three transfers from Seminole State College on the TC roster, missed the last month and a half of the fall season with an elbow injury and will be brought along slowly in the spring. Bolt is counting on Puckett to be one of his conference starters.

The same is true of left-hander Zach Fowler, who helped lead Liberty-Eylau to two state tournament championship games, then signed with Louisiana Tech before transferring to TC for the spring semester.

Others in the mix are 6-6 freshman Justin Fowler from New Diana (Texas) High School, Zach Gryder from Calhoun, La., Cody Wilson from Groesbeck, Texas, redshirt freshman Thomas Watson of Paris and perhaps Gip Hendrix, a freshman from Shreveport.

Gryder is the only other left-hander in the group.

The closer’s role appears to belong to right-hander Cory Hill, a sophomore transfer from Canada, who pitched in the JUCO World Series for Iowa Western last spring.

Several of the pitchers could also be everyday players, including Watson, who was redshirted after being injured early last year. He will start at third base and bat fifth in the lineup. Watson led the team in hitting in the fall.

“He’s going to get his hacks in and drive in runs,” Bolt said. “We’re counting on him big time.”

Australian Dean Malthouse returns at catcher, where he established himself as a steady performer last year. He will be backed up by Arkansas High graduate Lance Marvel.

“Dean can handle the bat and can catch and throw with anybody in the conference,” Bolt said. “He’s a lot stronger than he was last year. He’ll do most of the catching, but if Lance could catch one out of every four games that would give Dean some rest. Lance can also play in the outfield, and if he swings the bat like he’s capable, we may have to find a spot for him in the lineup.”

David Allday, a freshman from Texas High, earned the starting position at first base in the fall, and will hit third in the lineup. Last year’s designated hitter, David Phillips, will back him up, although Phillips will be the starter in left field.

Defensive whiz Trey Buck, a freshman from Crosby, Texas, will play second and bat second in the lineup.

Shortstop Justin Coats, a 2006 graduate of Texas High, hit 10 home runs for Seminole last year, but it’s been his defense that’s dazzled Bolt.

“Justin’s one of the most exciting athletes I’ve been around,” Bolt said. “He made some plays in the fall that you couldn’t believe. He missed the final three weeks with a sore elbow, but he’s healthy now. I’m confident he can make the plays shortstops have to make, and he’s also going to lead off for us.”

Watson’s entrenched at third with Puckett available to play there as well as shortstop and second base.

“Logan will be our swing guy,” Bolt said, “but if something happened to Trey, we’d probably move Watson to second and let Puckett play third.”

Phillips, from Nacogdoches, was one of the Bulldogs’ top hitters last year as the DH, but Bolt said he has made himself a good outfielder, earning the left-field position.

“He moves well for his size, and has a good arm,” Bolt said. “In fact, he may also pitch some for us. We put him on the mound a couple of times in the ball and he threw 88 (mph).”

Returnee Trevor Rainey, a spot player in right field last year, has moved to center, his old high school position.

“Trevor’s our best defender in the outfield,” Bolt said. “He has the most accurate arm, and even though he’s not the fastest guy, he gets the best jump off the bat.”

Gill will play right field when he’s not on the mound, and Bolt said he’s expecting big things offensively from him.

“He’s really worked on his swing. He can hit the ball out of the park, but he can also run and showed the ability to use the whole field in the fall. He’s probably our best base runner and has the best speed on the team.”

Anton Garcia, who started in left field last year, will back up Gill.

With Phillips occupying left field, the designated hitter’s role will fall to Hendrix, who smacked 18 home runs his senior season in high school.

The Bulldogs went 1-1-1 in the fall conference tournament held at Northeast Texas Community College, and Bolt got the chance to see much of his conference competition.

“As far as pure talent goes, I think Panola College really jumped out at me,” he said. “I didn’t see Angelina, but we played Navarro, and they’re always going to have three or four pitchers who get drafted every year.

“We should be in the mix. We don’t have a whole lot of depth, so some guys are going to have to stay healthy and produce. But I would put our guys up against anybody. As long as they perform their roles and stay together, I think we will have a shot at winning the conference.”

New Texarkana College baseball coach hits the ground running

Will Bolt hit the ground running last month, and the new Texarkana College head baseball coach has hardly slowed down.

“The last three weeks have been pretty busy,” Bolt said while taking a break from helping his wife move into their new home on Wood Street. “Coach (Justin) Sealy and I have had some long days in the office, and we’ve been bringing in a lot of kids to work out from all over Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. With all the travel and recruiting work, it’s been a busy time.”

During most of that time Bolt, the former volunteer coach at Texas A&M, has slept on an air mattress on the floor of his assistant coach’s apartment. Sealy was Bolt’s teammate at Nebraska under Dave Van Horn.

“Justin played at Northeast Texas Community College and Nebraska and coached at Paris Junior College,” Bolt said. “Then he took my place as volunteer coach at Nebraska after I left for Texas A&M. He and I both started our Texarkana College duties as soon as we (A&M) were eliminated by Rice.”

The two have made up a lot of ground in regards to TC players eligible to return from last season, but who were left in limbo until Bolt was officially released from his A&M duties.

“The majority of those guys are coming back,” Bolt said. “I guess you would say (pitcher) Jason Chowning is probably the headliner among that group, and (designated hitter/first baseman) David Phillips and (catcher) Dean Malthouse are among the better hitters returning.”

Others in the fold from the 2007 team are outfielders Trevor Rainey and Anton Garcia, catcher Kameron Forte and outfielder/pitcher Josh Gill. Thomas Watson, an infielder/pitcher who missed much of last season with an injury, is also returning.

Among those not coming back are pitcher Josh Turner, who earned a starter’s role late in the season, and starting shortstop Anthony Ortega.

But the biggest loss was center fielder Jamie Johnson, one of the team’s top hitters.

“Jamie and I had a couple of good talks, one when he came to A&M for a visit,” Bolt said. “He was pretty set on coming back, but he was being recruited heavy by Division I schools, and Oklahoma University threw a lot of scholarship money at him. He just felt he had to take their offer.”

Bolt also followed through on the signing of Texas High first baseman David Allday and said Arkansas High’s standout catcher Lance Marvel will also honor his earlier signing.

“Allday committed to TC when Chad Massengale was the interim coach,” Bolt said. “He signed with us about two weeks ago. Marvel was in our office just the other day. He’s coming, too.”

The jury is still out on Zach Fowler, Liberty-Eylau’s outstanding pitcher/player, who signed with TC before head coach James Mansinger’s dismissal, then later orally committed to D1 Louisiana Tech.

“We still haven’t given up on Zach yet,” Bolt said. “We see him as a legitimate two-way player for us. We’ve been talking to him, and he still hasn’t signed with Tech. Until he does, we’re going to do our best to convince him Texarkana College is the place for him.”

Bolt has reached agreement with two former Texas High players and another from Atlanta, who will transfer to TC from Seminole State College in Oklahoma.

Infielder Justin Coats, twice the defensive player of the year in high school, and outfielder Jared Washington are the former THS players returning to Texarkana. Infielder/pitcher Logan Puckett is also coming from Seminole.

“The first thing all the players from last year told me is we needed a shortstop,” Bolt said. “I think Justin Coats fits the bill.”

Another prize recruit for Bolt is third baseman/pitcher Gip Hendrix of Shreveport, the Class 1A player of the year in Louisiana last year.

“He had visited some other junior colleges and small colleges, but he wanted to wait until I got to Texarkana,” Bolt said. “We worked him out, and he officially signed today (Friday).”

Bolt said his connections with both Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn and Rob Childress and Matt Deggs at Texas A&M should help with his recruiting.

“I think it’s an advantage having played for and coached with those guys,” he said. “They will let us know about guys who they might not can take, but can play for us. That should really help.”

Bolt said Brad Flanders will join his staff as volunteer coach in the fall. Flanders, who was the University of Missouri’s starting catcher for two years, will work with the Bulldogs’ pitchers and catchers.

“I will work with the hitters and pretty much everything else,” Bolt said. “Coach Sealy will work with the hitters and outfielders.”

But there’s still work to be done before the actual coaching begins.

“We’re going to keep recruiting to see if we can find one or two players who may have slipped through the cracks,” Bolt said. “We’re pretty close to having our roster set for the fall, but we’re going to keep bringing in kids so we can identify the players we want to go after.”

Even with no more new signings, Bolt thinks the Bulldogs should be in good shape to defend their Region XIV East Zone title.

“With the guys we have coming back from the championship team and the ones we’ve added who should soften the blow for the loss of key players, we expect to be able to compete,” he said.
