Allday named Player of Year in East Zone

Texarkana College first baseman David Allday has been named Player of the Year in the East Zone of Region XIV baseball.

Allday, a sophomore from Texas High, was one of eight Bulldogs named to the all-conference team, including another ex-Texas High standout, John Stilson, at pitcher.

Second baseman Trey Buck and Thomas Watson, selected at designated hitter, made the elite squad for the second straight year. They are joined by sophomore transfer Joaquin Hinojosa and freshman Brian Ellis in the outfield, freshman catcher Jordy Snikeris and freshman pitcher Tanner Bailey.

Allday, who has signed with Kansas State University, batted .435 in confeence play with six home runs, five doubles and two triples. He drove in 35 runs, and was one of the top defensive first basemen in the league.

Stilson, who pitched under the watchful eyes of numerous major league scouts during the latter part of the season, struck out 50, walked eight and surrendered 43 hits in 43 2/3 innings. He finished conference play with a 2.47 earned run average and a 6-1 record.

Watson, injured in the early part of the season, batted .375 with three doubles, two triples, two home runs and drove in 15 runs in conference play. He plays third base for the Bulldogs.

Hinojosa, headed for Texas A&M, had a team-high 36 hits in 89 at-bats, including six doubles, two triples and seven home runs. He batted .404 and tied Allday for the team RBI lead with 35.

Buck was chosen at second base, although he also saw action at shortstop. He hit .309 with eight doubles, a triple, a home run and 17 runs batted in. He also drew 22 walks from the leadoff position.

Ellis collected 33 hits in 97 at bats, including eight doubles, three driples and two home runs. He batted .340 and drove in 24 runs.

Snikeras had eight doubles and two homers among his 31 hits. He drove n 18 runs and batted .425.

Bailey pitched 39 2/3 innings, allowing 41 hits, 11 walks while striking out 36. He had a 4-1 record and a 4.31 ERA.

The Bulldogs won their last seven games, sharing the East Zone title with Panola College, but TC will be the zone’s No. 1 seed in the Region XIV tournament starting Saturday at Blinn College in Brenham. Their first game will be 5 p.m. against Galveston College.
